Animal rights activists are mentally ill animal rights activists2

While searching out my next story for PoC, I came across the following “like” page on Facebook.

Rather than trying to explain the mentality of this group, I’ll post a few paragraphs here from the actual page.

“Animal Rights Activists are Mentally Ill and the DSM V Needs to Acknowledge it.The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association and is used to diagnose mental disorders.”

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association and provides a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders. It is used in the United States and in varying degrees around the world, by clinicians, researchers, psychiatric drug regulation agencies, health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and policy makers.

Feel free to use information and notes seen on this page, this page is not just to fight for the DSM-V to acknowledge animal rights activists as mentally ill, but to also inform and educate those being targeted by animal rights activist profiles and pages on Facebook. Do not be intimidated by them, I am here to help educate Facebook users under attack. I am with you.”

The page was started sometime in 2012, and there are many posts comparing animal rights advocates as mentally ill with a cult-like mentality.

There’s one comment by the page administrator I’d like to discuss. Not because I agree with it, but because I can see some truth in it.

“The goal they are trying to achieve is unattainable, the methods they employ are illegal, their sense of reality is warped. That about covers it. I also am appalled at the hate, the desire to harm children and the obsession with genitals and dead animal images.”

I don’t agree with the warped sense of reality, but I do know there are some sick individuals out there who will threaten the life of anyone who abuses an animal. I’m talking death threats, website hacking, and hateful comments that could land that person into more trouble legally than the person who actually harmed/killed the animal.

I’ve had two articles pulled by Examiner when I listed the name of the person committing abuse. Both articles brought about death threats, as well as threatening the safety of the abusers family. I’m afraid to name names these days when I report on abuse stories.

I don’t consider my sense of reality is warped. I recognize I can only do so much, and there’s no way I can save every animal I read about. There will always be more animals in need, regardless of how many we’re able to help. That’s inevitable.

This isn’t the first time animal rights activists have come under fire. I did an article for PoC at the beginning of 2012 – Are animal rights activists terrorists? In a nutshell, this article tells how the Freedom of Information Act has allowed the FBI to keep track of those considered to be animal advocates for the past decade.

Those investigating claims of animal abuse are violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, 18 USC Section 431.

One accusation made by the administrator of the Facebook page is animal rights activists are pedophiles who use pictures of animals to lure children. Take a look at the picture used for this article heading the page. It’s disturbing, to say the least.

The Facebook like page has only 300+ following it right now, but it leads me to wonder how those who don’t fight for animal rights think of those who do. Do people who sit back and do nothing critisise those who try to save cats, dogs, horses, etc?

I consider myself an animal rights advocate, but I’m reasonably sane. Most of the time, anyway. I spend a lot of time networking dogs and cats in need. I help military veterans who had a K-9 dog during their service reunite with that dog. I do a lot of lost dog and cat articles. I don’t believe I’ve threatened anyone. I do admit if I ever see a person physically harming an animal…well let’s just say Michael (PoC) had better hop on the first plane to the states to bail me out.

This should be an interesting discussion. How do you all feel concerning advocates being mentally disturbed? Do you consider yourself an animal rights advocate, or just a cat lover doing all you can to protect the welfare of cats?

Are animal rights activists mentally ill? — 44 Comments

  1. To be perfectly honest I kind of get pleasure at the idea of animal abusers being scared shitless by death threats and being hacked etc etc. I just wouldn’t go so far myself. I do admit that it gives animals rights activists a bad name but I think people are clever enough to see which ones are crazy and which ones aren’t.

I’m happy that if you abuse animals there’s a chance you will be so sorry about it because those crazy activists will scare the hell out of you.

Otherwise it would be that much easier to abuse animals.

Elisa I am afraid I am of the opinion that you SHOULD provide names EVERY time because thats the least we can do. I am always for the name being given to the public. The public will then make itself clear to the abuser what they think.

  2. The whole FB page is disturbing. First, what is an animal rights activist (ARA)? A person who wants animals to have greater rights. You don’t have to be a criminal to fight for animal rights. That is the first point.

Secondly the person who wrote the FB page is the one who is more likely to be mentally ill. He thinks ARAs are pedophiles and have low self-esteem and are jealous etc. etc.

Where did this nutcase get these ideas from?

Even people who break the law for the sake of animal rights are sometimes in the right. It is a last resort, a last stand against big business such as animal testing in laboratories. And it has brought about change.

Protesting in support of animal rights does bring about change in the end. I admire people who can take personal risks for the sake of better welfare for animals.

The FB page shows a massive divide between people who care about animals and people who like to use and abuse them.

I’ll presume that the person who started this sick FB page is a shooter and hunter. Someone who sees animals as something to be used by people who are superior. I am afraid this person is definitely inferior.

    • No, Michael, he/she is not “certainly mentally ill” any more than you are. He’s just highly reactionary. Not all conspiracy theorists are insane, and quite frankly, his arguments are far more well-reasoned than most. Don’t dismiss this guy so blithely. Over three hundred people already agree with him.

Also, there is zero evidence to suggest he is a hunter. When you make leaps in logic like that, you’re doing the very things he accuses animal rights activists of doing. Make no assumptions. Deal in facts only. That’s the only way to deal with people like this.

      • I disagree, look at this comment on that page

“The one word I associate with animal rights is “hate”. They hate everyone, everything and just are so caught up in the ugliness of hate they want us to feel it”

Read down the page they are obsessed with writing about mens private parts, the way they rant on about those and their spiteful remarks says to me they are the ones mentally ill,not us.
Only 300 likes on there, that’s not many considering the number of facebook members thank God the rest of them have more sense than to encourage that trashy page.
Loving animals and wanting rights for them isn’t about hatred it’s about caring.

        • Well, as with everything, I could be wrong.

I was just pointing out that it can be somewhat unproductive to say “no, u” when someone makes an accusation. It’s usually far more appropriate, especially with things like this, to go with a different meme entirely. Namely “cool story, bro.”

      • I agree, I went too far (I changed it) but he makes idiotic statements such as animal rights activists have a narcissistic personality disorder! Where the hell did he get that idea from? Also I am using the same language as this person to make the point. He is saying something that is clearly ridiculous. If he is serious he is deluded.

There is no evidence he is a hunter – agreed – but he writes as if he is a hunter. He has that right-wing fantasy style, highly exaggerated and as you say extremely reactionary. He has Bible Belt written all over him to me.

  3. Do you think PoCers are animal rights activists? I am — but I stay within the law etc.

The planet needs animal rights activists because often animals are abused and used in a cruel way.

  4. Well I’m not mentally ill (I hope lol) I’m just passionate about trying to stop the abuse of animals and make this world a better place for them. I’ve always been a peaceful animal welfare campaigner. Being called an animal rights activist puts the peaceful protesters like me amongst the real activists who vandalise scientists homes and cars, set lab animals free, etc and that does no good at all, that’s what gets them labelled mentally ill.
I can understand the animal rights activists, because animal abuse makes me feel very angry, but getting badly liked by causing trouble just turns other people, not as passionate about animals, against those who are.
So no Michael, PoCers are NOT animal rights activists, we are animal welfare campaigners with a shared particular interest in making the world a better place for cats.

    • Ypou are correct to analyse the meaning of the word ‘activist’ on it’s own. What denotes activism. It’s very general and includes a lot – that’s the problem.

      • Yes you are right Marc because we actually are active in that we are busy fighting for animal welfare, but the very words animal rights activists get people saying ‘Oh you mean those PETA freaks’
        Babz and I call ourselves
        ‘Peaceful animal welfare campaigners’

    • I think we are mild, sensible activists or would be if called upon to be an activist because there is no one definition of animal rights activist. The conventional view of someone who breaks into laboratories and releases animals is not the only form of “activism”.

      The word “activism” means:

the practice of vigorous action or involvement as a means of achieving political or other goals, as by demonstrations, protests, etc.

Well, I planned a demonstration against declawing. That makes me an activist. Some things can only be changed through activism. Words are not enough.

      • Yes the protest that never was, because only one activist was serious about it, YOU Michael.
I think I’ll never get over that fact because here activists mean action and not many back out.
It was to be a peaceful protest though, no violence or mud slinging or foul language and activism like peaceful protests are the only way to get things changed.

  5. Oh dear I’ve been in trouble for my anger at people who are cruel to animals but I learned my lesson that violence and hatred only makes things worse.
But I can’t help feeling a deep hatred inside me at anyone who hurts innocent animals including the rotten to the core vets who chop off cats toe ends in America.

      • Maybe that’s why I had to go off my medication for PTSD. I write about case after case when I’m a bit manic, but when the medication smooths things over I lose the desire to write.

      • Michael and Elisa, do you write consciously?
When I start writing an article I think how on earth can I put into words what is in my brain, but once I’ve started, it flows and more words just fit in along with writing the thoughts I’ve already had.
Posters are in my brain and I put the images onto the blank page, then they just seem to tell me how to set them out.
I’ve had a book in my brain for years and wish I could get that out onto pages and become rich and famous and able to do more for cat charities.

  6. All activists, inluding animal rights, gay rights, anti-war, environmental, etc., are often under fire. I think some of it may be because people view them as extremists and closeminded as opposed to passionate and trying to raise awareness. It’s just plain ignorance. All people have the right to pursue their beliefs and voice their opinions without being called insane or narcissistic. Those who disagree with that are exacly what they are spewing. I’ve heard, and believe, that when we criticize or pass judgment without evidence it is because we see or fear that the same “flaw” is in us.
I think the word “activist” has become such a negative that I prefer “advocate”.

    • I think the word “activist” has become such a negative that I prefer “advocate”.

I think this is the key sentence. Being an “activist” supporting animal rights can take many forms. Writing this comment is an activity that supports animal rights so I qualify as an animal rights activist and I am proud of it but mainstream society has branded animal rights activists as some sort of crazy person. The FB page that Elisa refers to goes further and brands ARAs as pedophiles and inadequates which is clearly bonkers.

    • Elisa, he is staying away these days. I don’t block him or delete his comments. He has just gone. No idea why. He disappeared after I published all his aliases and IP addresses but that may not be the reason.

      • I miss him. He may be a vile person, but he does make people aware there are crazies out there like him who’ll shoot a cat in a heartbeat.

Just finished a conversation on Facebook with the administrator of this article page. I said I’d love to see the two of you debate the issue.

        • The sort of people who hate animal rights activists are those who want private zoos and to keep wild cats in cages. They hate ARAs because they undermine what they want which is essentially an abuse of animals. People who hate ARAs are reactionary gits.

    • I think it’s penetrated his brain cell that every time he comments on PoC he contributes 5 cents to needy cats.
Maybe he’s gone to another cat site now and I say good riddance to him because anyone new coming along reading his spiteful, hate filled comments could decide never to return.

  7. Maneka Gandhi declares that she is an animal rights activist. She is in India. Maneka Gandhi is an Indian politician, animal rights activist, environmentalist, former model and widow of the Indian politician, Sanjay Gandhi. She looks about as sane and as normal as you can get. I called her India’s greatest woman!

  8. As a psychotherpist I can tell you the DSMIVTR (not DSMV) will not classify and entire group of people. Mental illness is individually assessed and diagnosed. One cannot lump an entire group of people into any catagory. Just from reading this post, and nothing else, it sounds as though the person who wrote this is very threatened by animal activits and is seeking to discredit them.

    • Yes, all reactionaries feel threatened that their way of life will be harmed by the more progressive group. ARAs are progressive. Reactionaries want to maintain the status quo even if it does damage the planet and animals because they benefit (they think) from exploitation and abuse of animals. That is why I think he is a hunter and someone who is disconnected from nature and as usual he is scared of anything and everything.

  9. ……..Why bother typing anything here when you delete and edit 95% of it so you can manipulate your members? What a waste of any sane and respectable person’s time, author as well as reader. You people and your lives are one of the least significant things on the internet….

Response from Michael: Look Woody, I have to edit some of your comments because they are too insulting and too rude and you use swear words. I don’t mind it that much but other visitors find your comments totally unacceptable. So, I edit and delete manually. There is no program that weeds out your comments. That is the point I am making.

Secondly, your comments are the only comments I delete or edit. All the others I welcome and accept as is. No changes. This is because they are written by decent people using decent English and the comments contribute to the debate even if I disagree with them.

I don’t need to manipulate things. I believe in the ethos of the site because it is about cat welfare. This post is a good example.

By the way PoC is doing fine still even after 6+ years. It is still ranked in the top 5 of all cat websites. Not bad when you think the competition is mainly managed by commercial enterprises and not a old man like me. Not bad when PoC discusses unpopular but important topics. We are proud of the site.

    • Read your amended comment, Woody and try to stop insulting people and using swear words. If you did you might get your comments published provided they didn’t show up too much paranoia.

      • Your free-roaming invasive species cats are a deadly insult to all native wildlife on earth, as well as an insult to the health and well-being of every person who doesn’t want cats in their lives. When you stop insulting the whole world and all life on it with your disease-infested invasive species vermin cats, then perhaps you won’t deserve insults in return. You get what you give.

        • You are getting mixed up Woody. You have no right to insult people personally as you do with me just because I keep a cat and like cats. You are employing ridiculous logic. I think you are just trolling me for the fun of it but it is not working Woody. I am not annoyed by you in the slightest. You are not winding me up. You are wasting your time.

          • Yes wasting Michael’s time and so very stupid to keep coming back when by every hate filled and spiteful comment you post you are contributing a donation to the cats you hate.
Yes you get what you give Woody (or whatever of your aliases you are using today) and here’s some news for you, YOU, not cats, are the vermin, so now you know.

            • Wow another 5 cents! That’s good for fifteen .22’s where I live. Can you save more cats for 5 cents than I can destroy for 5 cents? I don’t think so. (And I never miss, I’ve not wasted even one .22 yet on hundreds of shot-dead cats. Cats aren’t even worth losing 1/3rd of a cent on ’em so I make sure each bullet counts.) Are you people really this delusional? Apparently so. I could care less what a post here will contribute to cats. You could donate $1000 per one of my posts and I still won’t care because that’s only enough to TNR 7 cats in the USA. I can still get rid of more than twice that many cats for only 5 cents. I do more with 5 cents to permanently get rid of them than you can ever do with 5 cents to help even one of them. I win, cats lose, you lose.

              • So, Woody, I’m curious. Does your hatred go beyond cats? Do you feel the same about other animal species? Dogs, birds, reptiles, humans, horses, elephants?
Do you own an elephant gun?
Do you torture hamsters, gerbels, turtles, or do you just shoot them outright?

              • Destroying cats is neither hating cats nor a fear of cats.

Why do mentally-unbalanced and psychotic cat-advocates always presume that if someone is removing a highly destructive, deadly disease spreading, human-engineered invasive-species from the native habitat to restore it back into natural balance that they must hate that organism? Does someone who destroys Zebra Mussels, Kudzu, African Cichlids, Burmese Pythons, Brown Tree Snakes, or any of the other myriad destructive invasive-species in the USA or elsewhere have some personal problem with that species? (Many of which are escaped PETS that don’t even spread any harmful diseases, unlike cats.) Your ignorance and blatant biases are revealed in your declaring that people who destroy cats must somehow hate or fear cats. Nothing could be further from the truth.

It is people who let a destructive invasive-species roam free that tortures-to-death all other wildlife, wasted for their cats’ play-toys, that have zero respect for ALL life. They don’t even care about their cats dying a slow torturous death from exposure, animal attacks, diseases, starvation, dehydration, becoming road-kill, environmental poisons, etc., the way that ALL stray cats suffer to death. They don’t even respect their fellow human being. This speaks more than volumes about your disgusting character. People like you should be locked up in prison for life for your cruelty to all animals, cruelty to your own cats as well as all the native wildlife that you let your cats skin alive or disembowel alive for their and your entertainment. If you let cats roam free you are violating every animal-abandonment, animal-neglect, animal-endangerment, and invasive-species law in existence.

If people do hate cats today, have LEARNED to hate cats today, you have nobody but yourself and everyone just like you to blame. YOU are the reason people are now realizing that all excess cats must be destroyed on-site and on-sight. You’ve done so much to make people care about cats, haven’t you. If you want to do something about it, direct your sadly and sorely misplaced energies at those that are causing the problem, not at those who are actually solving it AND HAVE SOLVED IT 100%.

THIS IS YOUR FAULT and THE FAULT OF EVERYONE JUST LIKE YOU. You have NOBODY but yourselves to blame.

You can take that all the way to the very last shot-dead cat’s grave.

                • Woody, you are a very sad, deluded idiot who probably sits at home all day taking the odd spliff with beer (or a lot) looking for people who you can try and annoy. You are quite mad and right now I have had enough of your deluded rantings. Have a good week, you little fool.

Woody do you use Skype? If so let’s discuss this on Skype. Or the phone. Give me your phone number, Woody. You won’t though because you are scared.

              • I never reveal any more information about my personal life than I choose. Cat-lickers have been trying to find out who I am for over 3 years now. So far they have suspected and accused me of being any of 5 to 8 different professionals that they hate and despise, and have been wrong on all counts, continuing to be wrong on all counts. They don’t even know what hemisphere of the globe that I live in, one person desperately trying to find me in the UK lately. 🙂 (The joys of knowing how to use proxy-trains.)

…the rest I have deleted because it is a pointless rant by a madman (Michael – admin)

              • At the end of the month all the 5 cents add up to a nice sum and Michael who runs this purrrrrrrrrfectly fabulous site donates every cent to us, wow, meow, thank you Woody.
So you don’t hate us after all.
Cheers we raise a sprig of catnip to you.
Purr purr purr keep up the good work
                🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

            • p.s. re-read the article that this blog entry pertains to. You qualify for everything that’s said on it, by claiming that humans are vermin, that makes that article 100% correct about you and your kind.

              • Just what I thought you are Woody a snivelling little coward who daren’t face a real man like Micheal.
If you get your thrills from people trying to find out who you are then you are one seriously sick in the head troll.
You can’t prove a thing and I don’t believe you have done any of what you say it just makes you feel like a big man to pretend you have.
Talk about vermin I don’t think you even qualify for that you are less than vermin you poor sad lonely fool.
Ooooh you’ll need to change your nappy now a big lady has took notice of you.

    • Yes, Vicky, we do have a resident troll. He is quite mad. He uses “proxy servers” or train so that he can remain anonymous. The sure sign of a pathetic troll who doesn’t have the courage to discuss things face to face as I have suggested.
