Lion would almost always win against tigers. This was true in the Roman period. In fact, there was only one recorded case of a tiger defeating a lion in Rome and it was investigated by the Roman authorities.

This leads one to believe that the Lion was ALWAYS the victor in fights with tigers. If not, then why investigate.

Also, the behaviors of the two animals are so different it's like night and day. A lion is born fighting. It must fend for itself for little scraps of meat from a kill the adults have made. It risks it's life doing so. Then when they are old enough they are promptly kicked out of the pride and are on their own until they can challenge other dominant males for the right of the pride. Once won, the victorious lion must defend the pride against everything in Africa. This is clearly an animal with a warrior mentality. It must have otherwise it would not be able to survive.

Tigers are completely different on the other hand. Tiger cubs stay with their mothers between 4-5 years. They are very well taken care of as tigers are excellent mothers. When old enough, they then become solitary hunters. This is a huge difference. A tiger, being solitary, cannot afford a confrontation or it will risk being injured and possibly death. Tigers therefore will avoid direct conflict if it can do so.

Lions are another matter completely. They must defend the pride at all costs. They have been observed going in against all odds even when death is certain. A lone lion will fight other lions outnumbered 4 to 1. They have been observed taking on entire clans of hyenas single handed, sometimes being outnumbered by more than 20 to 1. There are accounts of lions taking on bull rhinos, cape buffaloes, and even elephants.

A lion who reaches 5 years of age may have already had 150 life and death encounters at a minimum. given these facts how can a tiger compete? The mentality and lifestyle of a true warrior versus that of a solitary stealth hunter.

This is no contest. A Lion will win 10 out of 10 times all things being equal.

Yes indeed, it is true there a few books that alibi the lion always won in Rome like here...
-
1. “Next, the arena was lowered to feature combat between them -- Romans cheered as lions tore apart tigers, an went up against bears, leopards against wolves. It goes without saying that the Romans had never heard of animal rights.”
~Ken Spiro; WorldPerfect (Book)
-
2. The Memoirs of Cleopatra
“They took on tigers, bears, bulls, and wild boars. Usually the lion won. page 284” (Book)
-
3.Despite the final appearance given by the movie, tigers were largely unsuccessful in the gladiatorial area. Lions were more popular as they put on an excellent fight display, where as tigers were surprisingly reluctant to enter into battle. Placed in with lions, the tigers would often simply retreat.
Tiger Territory (Book)
-
4. "Another subspecies very closely related to the Asian lion - the Barbary lion or Panthera leo leo - became extinct in the wild in 1922 (in Morocco). This animal the Barbary lion had been the dominant animal in the blood sports of the Roman arenas."
~Martin Seyer's dissertation (synopsis), (Vienna University Documentation).

Most people straight from Rome, like italy, baglug an other districts, have told me that tell any one if they think tiger's alway's won, to come here themself's. You wont find to much statue's an art of tiger's, but you'll find at mostly every corner in every town, a statue dedicated to the Champion of the gladitorial arena, the "Lion".

science of fight
by: Parth Tiwari

my pal,
the nature chose to make them so.....
it's indeed about aggression, stamina and skills, but do also count physical strength, muscle mass, intelligence and speed.
as you know, momentum = mass * velocity,
therefore it's clear that tiger's punch will have more impact every time since it has both mass and speed advantage.

it makes sense..................

CLARITY

It's useless to debate

We can never determine who is Superior
that will depend on the individual animals fighting,

if you outweight somenone by 60 pounds
does that mean that you will win the fight

how about if the lion is 550-Lbs
and fights a Tiger thats 450-Lbs the smaller subspecies? what then

No it's all about
-Aggression
-Stamina
-Fighting Skills

tiger will win
by: Parth Tiwari

hey p.d.

well researched but i dont agree with u ....

1. tigers do not stay with their mothers for 4-5 years! they only stay with her for about 30-36 months and they attain full sexual+ physical + intellectual maturity at the age of 3 yrs. maximum.and then set of to build then own territory..

2. u are right that a lion is a very experienced fighter; but its not a born fighter. these are the situations that make him the fighter. and u have judged the tiger wrong, tigers are fiercely territorial. though they dont fight as much as lions but they do fight very often and till death.tiger death rates are very high in territorial disputes, they even fight with sloth bears in India and with black and brown bears in siberia. and we know what strength a bear has...

3. u didn't just bother about other factors like size; strength; stamina; agility; smartness; fighting style and skills; intelligence; misc etc.
and tiger excels in all. they hunt larger animal and dont live in a pride so they know how to takcle animals if they r alone and thus a solitary lion cant beat a solitary tiger.....not at least 10 on 10..... a tiger will win about 7-8 times off 10.............

  1. Lions would straight destroy tigers most of the time because they are the better, more fierce fighters. Nature has evolved the male lion to be a fighter supreme. The tiger may be larger and somewhat stronger, however the lion more than makes up for this slight size disadvantage in sheer ferocity and combat moxy. Over the many centuries man has marvelled at the power, ferocity and regal bearing of these two great cats, yet it has been recorded throughout history that the mighty “King Of Beasts” have prevailed more often than not when confronting his striped cousin. Even wild animal trainer extraordinaire Clyde Beatty of American circus fame remarked that whenever his lions and tigers squabbled the lions always defeated the tigers before the fierce battles were broken up via water cannon. Lions are thugs and total bad asses who almost always give tigers a straight BEAT DOWN!
