The African Serval cat is not domestic nor should one be treated as such. These magnificent animals are naturally wild by nature but fairly easy to socialize with the proper treatment from day one. Anyone who thinks they desire to have one as a lifetime companion needs to take the time to learn all they can before making the decision to acquire one. My passion and pleasure of being a breeder of these cats is to place a kitten in a forever home where they will live in harmony with their human family. If you are materialistic and particular about your home being maintained extremely pristine then a Serval may not be a good choice for you.

I am more than happy to share my personal experiences living with Serval cats. Moreover you are welcome to ask any questions you may have before deciding to adopt one into your home.

UK Serval and F1 Savannah
by: Jayne

The only serval and F1 breeder in Uk I know to be real is Hotspot exotics in scotland where i got mine. Clips can be seen of me with my cat on u tube Nala uk serval. would love to put some clips up on here if able.

Nala my serval is 18 months old now and my F1 boy Leon is the first F1 Savannah boy born in UK last year.

My cats are just wonderful, very friendly and litter box trained although in true my litter boxes are baby baths as normal litter boxes are just way to small. I have DWAL and also live in uk.

Would love to post some photos if possible

I don't know where you are but A1 Savannahs (Oklahoma, USA) are excellent and I know the Stuckis, the husband and wife team who own and run the cattery/farm. They breed servals and they ship. I'd contact Martin Stucki. No guarantees though as I don't know their procedures etc. Google "A1 Savannahs" and go to their website.

I know of a respected UK Serval and Early Savannah breeder
by: Jayne

I got my amazing Serval, whom I named Nala from Hotspot Exotics here in the UK. They are the only producers of F1 Savannas in the UK and have Serval cubs too. For me I would have had to spend 4 to 6 thousand dollars buying one abroad from a respected breeder, with an additional six thousand on quarantine due to UK requirements. I did see some servals that where a little less, but there parents where related and I didn’t want a cat who’s parents where brother and sister... there are a lot of breeders out there doing this and it can lead to problems down the line. I spoke to a lot of Serval breeders and vets prior to buying my cat, so I did my homework, so to speak. If I had imported, I would have ended up with a not so friendly cat, costing approx 10 to 12 thousand pounds. My Serval came to me from a cub and has been hand reared. She is just amazing and is the sweetest in nature. She uses her litter tray like any domestic and follows me around like a dog. People who say that Servals like being on their own and that they don’t make wonderful pets need to come and see my cat.... She has a large enclosure, which she plays in the day with my other three domestics cats and she lives in the house, in the evening. I have a large house and grounds so she gets plenty of exercise, so she has a good home. I believe you require the same amount of space for a Serval / early Savannah as you would for a large dog. My cat is just a dream come true. In the evening she empties her toy box and brings me all her toys to play. If you’re looking for a Serval or early generation Savannah in the UK, Hotspots Exotics have the most wonderful cats. The lady there does a lot for conservation and is a true animal lover. She only sells one or two Servals / Savannahs a year and is very much concerned about the animals welfare and the longterm home that you can provide. She dedicated her life to her dogs and exotic cats, which started when she rescued some Servals from Canada at a cost of forty thousand pounds to buy and bring home. Her cats have a wonderful life and she has put tens of thousands of pounds in her enclosures, so you have the peace of mind of knowing, that you are buying your animal from a person who is respected and is a highly regarded breeder. Her cats are unrelated, so there are no problems with interbreeding. If you’re looking for a big cat, with a domestic cat personality I cant think of a better place to go. It has taken me three years to find my Serval, who would of been better named shadow given she follows me around so much...Lol However she was worth the wait. I can’t speak highly enough of these amazing cats which to own is such a privilege.

Serval Kittens
by: Anonymous

The first time I heard of Serval Kittens was when I heard of Toygers. These beautiful excotic "cats"

would have been nice to have.

I found an ad online for 2 free Serval Kittens. I

contacted the owner and she agreed to send them to

me via by airplane. She only asked for half the

airfare for them. I being nieve sent her $85.00

to send the Servals.

Before I knew it, she was asking for more money

for proper cage and this and that. I was upset

when I didn't get them. My kids were looking forward to playing with them...and wenever got

them. I was heartbroken. Being they were "For

Free" the lady should have been honest with me.

I now have a kitten, 2 months old and is cute. I

think if he grew up with a Serval they would make

good friends.

Just want to let everyone know, if you see an ad

from SophiaMarie Flores, don't believe her about

having Serval Kittens. Make sure you do go through

breeders that are licensed.

uk serval
by: Anonymous

My uk serval has nothing to do with a1 savannahs. The only place except a zoo in the uk is wildcat breeders and hotspot exocits who have serval cubs fi savannahs and asain leopards. All of which are breed here in the uk and are bottle feed hand reared. The lady won't let just anyone have her cats. You really do have to show that you are willing to give your cats a good home. The lady has spent a fortune on her enclosures and cat housing. Her cats have a wonderful life with more space than I have seen at any zoo. The lady breeds for conservation programms and she will sell a cub iif she believes your wishing to give the cat a nice home and the money she gets just helps keeps her own cats. I had a very positive experience buying my wonderful people friendly serval cub from hotspot exocitics

The link to the website: www.servalkittens.com now goes to a Savannah cat breeder's site. It seems that the former breeders sold out but that is a wild guess.

A1 Savannahs also breed Servals so I would contact them if you are looking for a serval.

If you Google "A1 Savannahs" or "Savannah Cat" you will see their website.

Thankful to own my wonderful serval cub here in the UK
by: Jayne

Dear all

Just reading all the comments in relation to being able to find and buy a serval cub here in the uk. I would just like to inform those that are serious that it is possible to buy a serval cub here in the UK. I have a house with land and carry a licence to own such a pet.

My serval is very sweet and requires much the same work as any animal of its size and age. The cost of buying / looking after and housing I find to be much the same as my horse. Her outdoor enclosure and building cost much the same as my stable and fencing of a paddock. if the cost of spending many thousand of pounds buying such a pet is a concern, then maybe they are Not the pet for you, as you will spend twice as much providing a suitable home and enclosure. A dog shed and small concrete enclosure is not acceptable for such a high energy and intelligent animal.

I am working class and to get to the stage where own such a cat and able to provide a suitable home has taken many years of hard work and saving. Under my licence, my serval lives in the house and in her outdoor heated building with outdoor enclosure. She is friendly to all, but like all animal she knows who are her family

I looked at importing a cat into the UK but with quarintine you end up spending around 8k and you get a cat that hasnt been touched for six months and not so friendly.... There are alot of fakes out there and people saying that they have a cat or cub when they dont..

The cub I bought here in the uk is worth every penny I paid for her. When I looked at the cost the breeder had gone to, to provide her serval cats with a wonderful home and quality of life i dont believe she is in it for the money at all. The Lady breeder I bought my serval from is a true animal lover, an exceptional lady and not a animal user in any shape or form. I had to prove i was serious and committed to the serval i was buying and able to provide a happy and stable long term home. It was only as a result of this, that my bottle hand reared serval cub came home with me. So if you are serious about buying a Uk friendly serval cub, know that it is possible. The lady also breeds Asian leopards in addition to servals but it is mainly for conservation. I believe she will breed a cub for a private home if she is confident that you are able to provide a stable and loving home.

I have written this comment only to share my experience with other, as it was only as a result of talking and listening to others that i was successful in owning such a very special cat

Kindest Regards

Jayne

hi, i have always been a huge fan of big cats, i am not under the illusion that they can be totally domesticated because like all big cats they.including the serval, will always have the wild element in them for as long as they live as they are wild animals.I would realy love the oppertunity to home a wonderful cat like the serval as i believe that i understand them and facinated by big cats almost my whole life so i have spent time learning and reading about them. i would just like to know what sort of permits and what sort of an enclosure would be ideal for housing a serval? i would like to state that i have owned monkeys in the past so i do have an idea of the hard work that goes into dealing with your not so average house pets. thank you for your time

You will have to get a license issued by the local authority in England that governs the area where you intend to live.

I'd go to the DEFRA website.

Declawing - immoral
by: Anonymous

Very shocked at the comment of the 'zoologist' who talks of declawing. It's a barbaric practice that's only legal in the US. Not sure where you did your training but you would have been told that animal lovers in the rest of the world wouldn't even dream of it and vets can be prosecuted in Europe for performing the procedure. Cats come with claws. The safety of your furnishings is not worth removing parts of an animal's body. If you're intimidated by your pet, stick to goldfish. I'd also question how Servals come to be in people's possession in the US - they're native to Africa! I'd like to see how ethical the process of removing these animals from the wild could possibly be.

Well if you would read my comment the right way, I'm saying that you don't even know who these people are that you are talking to, they could be millionairs, and how do you think millionairs get to that status? By penny pinching, don't talk to me about working I probably do more work in a day than you do in a week. Nobody's whining about anything it sounds to me that you guys are because you maybe already have one and don't want anyone else to. People are just on here to find out more about something they like or would like to have, and then let them work toward it and find out maybe with less harsh words. Sounds to me like you guys are haters more than animal lovers.

"Mr Anonymous is absolutely right!"
by: Anonymous

Nothing infuriates me more than to see a posting where someone whines "Gee, I really, really, really want a (Bengal, Savannah, Serval or whatever other expensive item) but I can't afford one. I'd give it a really good home though." They think that entitles them to get one for free or "cheap".

Get off your butt and work for the money like the rest of us do. And what the hell will you do when your "cheap" kitten needs expensive veterinary care or food you can't afford? The vet couldn't care less what your sad story is, he still wants his money. I really, really, really want a Mercedes too, but I can't afford one and I'm sure if I went to the local Mercedes dealership and tried that whine story on them, they'd run me out of there.

So get real out there and stop thinking the world owes you something.

This is for whoever the Mr. Anonymous is who can't say his name and keeps talking about people wanting servals for cheap or for free. When you go to Wal-Mart and buy something on sale do you ask to pay full price on it? I didn't think so, these are just ordinary people who have a love for animals don't bag on people for finding out how to maybe save the $4500 on actually buying one and saying that they can't afford to raise one. This isn't an ego contest on how much money one makes or what they do for a living.

How much or little do servals try to dig out of their enclosures? Im in the process of planning how to buy a serval and i'm concerned mostly about how to create this outdoor enclosure. Are underground fences truly needed?

Thanks
by: Michael

I just want to say a thank you to the person who made the last comment. I like hearing about the reality of keeping a Serval from someone who has first hand knowledge and intelligence. It is obviously extremely important to enter into the task of keeping such an animal with a realistic approach. I am sure that there are many people who want to live with a Serval because they like the idea forgetting really that the other half of the deal is a living creature. Does the Serval want to live with some of these people? No, not if they don't have a realistic approach to the task backed up with appropriate finance and space etc.

Without wanting to be critical there is a tendency for the human race to treat other creatures on the planet as "objects" such as refrigerators or cars.

Serval
by: Anonymous

I own a pure breed African Serval. They are expensive to purchase(I paid $4500) and expensive to maintain. If you are looking for a Serval to adopt, rescue or free you are not qualified to own one. First, plan on about $1200 for declaw, neuter, vaccines, worming, microchip and FELV testing and bloodwork. Now, plan on about $65 for a case of ZuPreen and additional raw diet cost about $40 per month. I also had built a cattery that was another $800. I agree, Serval are wonderful pets! Mine sleeps with me, is litter box trained and gets alone with all my other cats and dogs. But, it is still a wild animal and can react accordingly if frightened, scared or cornered. Please do your research before you purchase one. I am a zoologist and extremely knowledgable. You also need a wiildlife permit in many states, as well as a USDA license too. I love my exotic pets but they are wild animals that will cost lots of money to maintain and properly care for. If you can NOT afford one, please do not get one. FYI Anonymous

Response to last comment
by: Michael (PoC Admin)

Hi Josh, thanks for the comment. Personally, I can't add much to what I have said on the website. The best bet is for you to contact breeders, both Serval breeders and Savannah breeders who will have first hand knowledge of living with a Serval.

For me it is totally unworkable, too much input required and not enough space. I would have thought space (physical space, lots of it, ideally), time (likewise lots of it) and a bit of money is required, coupled with accurate expectations, which can only be got from people with first hand experience.

I have touched and played with a Serval
by: Michael (PoC Admin)

Hi, it seems quite a few people would like to have a Serval as a companion cat. I can see the attraction. You may have seen this video on the Savannah cat page as the Serval is the wildcat parent/ancestor of the Savannah but if not it is here:

See the above video in very large format and in high definition by clicking on this link (you go to a new window): Serval cat a tame wildcat that acted like a domestic cat.

The Serval in the video (at A1 Savannahs in Oklahoma, USA) was a great boy cat, very friendly and similar to a domestic cat but considerably bigger and different in that you could sense the wildcat in him. For people considering living with a Serval I would do as Patrice Williams, the breeder who posted the article suggests, and contact him or another breeder including Savannah cat breeders (who keep Servals to breed from) and ask questions. The major obstacles after price (inc. maintenance etc.) and getting expectations right (i.e.being prepared for a change in your lifestyle) is the legal issues as there will be regulations in place regarding ownership (as I may have mentioned somewhere else!) and some States in the USA don't allow it and in the UK there will be greater obstacles (start with Defra). Here are some more thoughts: Serval cats that mainly concern the USA.

How to Adopt
by: Anonymous

I think the best thing is to check out the major issues such as what it is like living with a tamed wildcat and the legal issues (I cover some of this here: Serval Cats. Then contact a breeder like the one attached to these comments. I think one really has to get all the facts and take a reality check before embarking on the journey. I made a post about Serval Escapes and got heavily criticized. Mind you I was heavily critical myself. But some people don't cope well and the cat gets abandoned and injured or killed. I don't like it when people do what they want at the possible expense of the cat That is in no way saying that you can't be perfect!

Rare Serval
by: meg

Everything I have heard about Servals seems to contradict the one I have. He hates to be held, only touches you when he wants to but is an amazing house cat. He walks well on a leash and loves to follow me around the house.

I have OCD and he is wonderful about playing with only his toys. The only thing I hear I am missing out on is the cuddling. He is not a cuddler!
Over all I love having a Serval!

Question
by: Becky

I have been thinking of adopting a Serval cat in the future but first want to know as much information as possible. What are Servals like with other animals as I already have a cat and a dog, my dog is no threat though as he is very well behaved with my cat. Would a be able to allow Servals out to roam freely like ordinary cats? i live in the country and are surrounded by fields and mountains. Would I be better off adopting two so they can keep each other company hen im not there?

Answer:

Hi, I'm Michael. I run this website. I have not lived with a Serval. But they are wild cats, tamed to be domesticated. There are numerous considerations. Have a look at the Serval page on this site first. Think of legal requirements first. I don't know where you live but there will certainly be legal requirements. Running wild - no. The only practical way is a very large enclosure in my opinion but seek the advice of a Serval or Savannah breeder for first hand experience. I list some at the base of the Savannah and Serval pages.

Servals will be demanding. You must have the time and resources (financially and in terms of time).

I want one desperately!
by: Anonymous

Could you please educated me on what I am in stale for?! If I desperately want to own one? Thanks ~Mary xoxo

Response from Admin:- If you would like to live with a Serval, I would first read the page on this site and ask yourself if you can manage and have the right set up at home to accomodate a Serval, which is a tamed wild cat. There are real demands in time, space and expense. The rewards are high too but above all you must do what is right for the cat. Think twice even three times.

      • Britney, sorry the comment you responded to was by a breeder in Canada who placed his comment in the wrong place. I moved the comment to here, but failed to move his details. I don’t breed servals.

A note of warning. Make sure you are fully aware of what it means to look after a serval.

This is a wild cat species. Medium sized. It is a Labrador sized cat.

The cat might spray urine to mark territory causing a messy/smelly home. You might want to declaw the cat which is morally wrong…should I go on….?

Dream about it but don’t do it. Adopt a wanted cat from a rescue center and love him. It’ll work out far better I guarantee.
