Cats rescued from tornadoes but their owner did not want them back

This is rather a strange story. You may remember the Arkansas tornadoes. Lots of destruction and lost pets. A lot of good people pulled together to reunite lost cats and dogs with their human caretakers. You would have thought that a person who was reunited with her lost cats would be overjoyed. All you’ll ever see are reunions in which the person is overcome with emotion on being reunited with her beloved cat/dog.

However, this person, and I don’t have his or her name, decided to surrender them after they had been rescued. This is a group of six cats, all survivors of the Arkansas tornadoes on April 27, 2014. Charlie Brown is one of them. He is described as “owner surrendered after the storm in order to find a new home”.

The advertisement for this cat to find a new home states that the family misses him but think that it is best that he is re-homed. Another cat in this group is a 6-year-old Maine Coon. All 6 cats are currently at: Maumelle Animal Services 425 Hyman Dr. in Maumelle. For more info, call them at 501-851-6219 or email maumellefoa@aol.com.

I suppose that I will have to try and figure out why she or he decided to relinquish her cats at such a sensitive moment. I suppose, if we are being fair and kind it may simply be the case that the cat’s owner lost her home in the tornadoes. The owner may have to rent somewhere and we know that renting presents problems because landlords don’t like cats in their properties.

Or perhaps, the person has to rebuild her home from scratch or repair it and the building will be highly disruptive to her cats making it very difficult to care for them properly.

However, if you analyse these two options they don’t really hold water because they are temporary arrangements and during temporary arrangements it should be possible for someone else to care for the cats and then afterwards the cats can then be reunited permanently with their owner.

To be perfectly honest, I cannot think of a really solid reason why a person should relinquish his/her cats under these circumstances. It is always possible to find a way to hang on to your cats. It is really a question of priorities and what’s important to the person.

Having said that, I am forced to conclude that this person did not really want to continue to look after her cats in the first place and, dare I say it, may even have wished that they were lost in the tornadoes. I’m being cruel in saying that but judging by what has happened there may be some truth in it.

What do you think might be the cause of this strange decision?

  1. I think this family is in shock after losing everything they own and just aren’t thinking. They should have been offered foster care. There are lots of people wanting to foster the tornado pets. The ones with destroyed homes are being put up in motels and perhaps 6 cats wouldn’t be allowed. I really think they’ll regret the decision to give up their cats when things calm down. I am working with one girl who has hundreds of dollars in vet and boarding bills. There are agencies that are supposed to cover these, as she’s living in a motel room since her home was destroyed. It’s still a mess with dead animals still being recovered.

  2. To me, it doesn’t matter what excuses they have for relinquishing. If they had considered the felines as family members before the storms, they would be thrilled with a reunion.
So, these poor traumatized cats need to be in better homes and with better caretakers now.

  4. I think it’s shocking that those cats survived the tornado and now are unwanted, you’d think the owner would have been ecstatic that they were safe.
What does ‘they think it best he was rehomed’ mean? Best for who? Not the poor cats for sure, trauma after trauma, the tornado, going to a Shelter and now either stuck there or if lucky, to face yet another trauma getting used to a new home.
If the people are homeless they could have surely asked for the cats to be cared for until they are able to take them back.

    • I hate to be tough on people but it just looks wrong. It does not make sense. To think what the cats have gone through: tornadoes and now split up and placed in strange homes (maybe). Not good.
