Do you remember the story about Lenny, the beautiful tuxedo shorthair cat who was adopted in March from Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions; only to be returned two days later because his adoptive “pawrents” couldn’t stand his constant stinky flatulence?
Lenny was rescued from a park located in Rochester, New York last February. Given an abundance of tender loving care by the team at Scottsville Veterinary Hospital. within a short time he was ready to be adopted into a “fur-ever” loving home.
However, much to the dismay and shock of the folks working at Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions, Lenny was returned to the shelter only two days after he had been adopted.
According to the Democrat and Chronicle, Lenny’s two-day “owner” returned the cat to the shelter, leaving a comment on the intake papers explaining the reason he was returning the cat. The comment read: ”He farts all the time.” The short-term adopter even suggested that Lenny might do better as an outdoor kitty, due to his smelly-output gastric issues.
Over the years I have listened ad nauseum to just about every excuse in the books about why some adopters are compelled to return their cats to shelters. These range from the cat’s unacceptable behaviors such as, urinating all over the house, scratching the furniture and carpets to other behaviors that the adopters consider mean and, aggressive, or spiteful.
But in all these years in which I have had the inordinate honor of living with felines and the pleasure of hanging out with cat lovers, I have never had anyone tell me that they heard about a cat that was returned to a shelter due to excessive farting!
Jessica Giehl, the director of Scottsville Adoption commented: “But since he’s been back here, there haven’t been any problems.” While a healthy diet and a clean environment may account for this change, Giehl added, “But we did still nickname him ‘Smelly Cat.’”
A post made on March 31 on the Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions’ Facebook home page turned Lenny into a “minor” celebrity.
But there’s no more need to be concerned about this precious, special kitty, who at one time had the “Smelly” moniker bestowed upon him.
I gives me great pleasure to announce that Lenny has once again found a happy and loving purrmanent home; this time with a family that apparently isn’t concerned one little bit about any future “gaseous” emissions that Lenny may have in store. I just love happy endings (no pun intended)!

The people at Scottsville Animal Hospital are great people!! They worked hard to home Lenny with someone that will love him forever. I have to say that returning a cat because of gas problems is just plain stupid. I am glad he has a new forever home. PS: Our cats occasionally have this problem too. I would never think to send them packing. they are to sweet natured to let a little gas make us part.
I suppose all cats have the occasional flatulence just like people! We don’t get rid of our spouses because they fart, do we? Mind you I can think of some wives who might be considering it! 😉
