Who's the king of the jungle? Who would win the lion versus tiger fight? An old question about inter-species conflict has, unfortunately, been answered in reality, on the ground (see an earlier post too - why a lion would lose in a lion versus fight).

A tiger killed a lion at a zoo in Turkey after finding a gap in the fence that separated them, the BBC reports. Zoo officials say the tiger killed the lion by severing its jugular vein with a single swipe of his paw. The zoo has six tigers and two remaining lions, and insists it is still safe to visit.

Tiger vs Lion Accounts

1) - "In the records of the Roman arena we found that the tiger was usually victorious in such a combat." - Wild Animals in and out of the Zoo by William M. Mann, Director, National Zoological Park, Vol. 6 of the Smithsonian Scientific Series, 1930, p. 82

2) http://www.rudimentsofwisdom.com/pages/tigers.htm } "In fights between a tiger and a lion in the wild, the tiger is usually the winner." - The Rudiments of Wisdom Encyclopedia by Tim Hunkin

3) - "The question is often raised whether the lion or the tiger is the more formidable beast. The evidence seems to be in favor of the latter, for cases are on record of tigers in captivity killing lions, but there appears to be no known instance of a lion killing a full-grown tiger." see:

4) 60 lions where killed by tigers, so this Is equal to 60 accounts

5) “In 1857 a tiger at Bromwich broke into the cage of a lion and a fearful scene ensued: ‘the lions mane saved his head and neck from being much injured, but the tiger at last succeeded in ripping up his belly, and in a few minutes he was dead. - The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. Charles Darwin”

6) 4 Lions where killed.

"George Stubbs, the most famous and original animal painter of his time who was just reaching his peak in 1759, liked to display combats of lion versus tiger, though he did not commit the egregious mistake made in James Ward’s animal pictures painted later in the century where the lion symbolizes Britain and the tiger India; in reality, as we know very clearly from the obscene animal fights staged by the Ancient Romans in the arena, the tiger would win in such a sight every time.” (pg. 163) - 1759: The Year Britain Became Master of the World

These are just some of the few hundreds accounts of Tiger vs Lion.

whoops... I just re-checked jackjacksonj.com an he changed the wordings of number "4" from number "352" not 252.. lol still how pathetic is that. That would have been a debut thing if a zoo allow'ed 60 lions fight 60 tiger's XD pure stupidy an ignorance on his part.
-
Who he even state's, that tiger's in the roman days alway's won, apperently in these document's, it was the other way around...
-
1. “Next, the arena was lowered to feature combat between them -- Romans cheered as lions tore apart tigers, an went up against bears, leopards against wolves. It goes without saying that the Romans had never heard of animal rights.”
~Ken Spiro; WorldPerfect (Book)

2. The Memoirs of Cleopatra
“They took on tigers, bears, bulls, and wild boars. Usually the lion won. page 284” (Book)
-
3.Despite the final appearance given by the movie, tigers were largely unsuccessful in the gladiatorial area. Lions were more popular as they put on an excellent fight display, where as tigers were surprisingly reluctant to enter into battle. Placed in with lions, the tigers would often simply retreat.

4. "Another subspecies very closely related to the Asian lion - the Barbary lion or Panthera leo leo - became extinct in the wild in 1922 (in Morocco). This animal the Barbary lion had been the dominant animal in the blood sports of the Roman arenas."
~Martin Seyer's dissertation (synopsis), (Vienna University Documentation).

Most people straight from Rome, like italy, baglug an other districts, have told me that tell any one if they think tiger's alway's won, to come here themself's. You wont find to much statue's an art of tiger's, but you'll find at mostly every corner in every town, a statue dedicated to the Champion of the gladitorial arena, the "Lion".

HUH! NEW
by: Prime

First of all Id like to say bull shit!!! I know exactly where you got that info from. You got it from jackjacksonj.com . Where I have reviewed his entire page, of 3 main things that make up his website.
-
1.(REPEATS) Around a 150 accounts are repeats of the same account, he just spaced them out cleaverly, to act as if they were different accounts an even numbering as if they are, HUH!
-
2.(OPINIONS) Around a 100 accounts of the "Not repeats", are opinion's, that state no such fighting. Only idea's of what they think, If I said I "think" a tiger can kill a lion..that is not an account of a tiger killing a lion now is it?
-
3.(BULLSHIT) Around 80 of the "Not repeats" and
"Not opinions" are "Bullshits" with changed wordings just like the one you presented.. on Number 4). which says
-
-60 lions where killed by tigers so thats 60 account"s-
-
Now go back the website, an look closely at number 88. He says the same thing, an look at number 252, the word's used are identical, with him just adding in 60 lions were killed into the article, of only 1 lion fought a tiger. Thats pretty pathetic, ecspeacially when he name calles lion fans as if 1 of there accounts presented was a lie, when 90% of his so call 360 accounts are BULLSHIT!!!

Evolution NEW
by: Anonymous

You must be a complete fool, to think that there is even a majority for tigers, when they are solitary and prides contradicts that 100% from small prides of 2 males, 10 females. In a pitfight anything is up for grabs male vs male 1 on 1 its 50/50 because they are more idenditcal in more ways that they are not an in an awesome way, nature has gave leverage to both, yet leaving them equals. Like an average 80 pounds hevier weight for the tiger and a battle protecting mane for the lion.
-
Your just trying to enphinsize that a white man on average can beat up a black man or vice versa... theres no way, in telling whats the average amount would be. It only depends on individuality of the lion or tiger if its 1 on 1 but by natures standards, with out man intervention the only way cheetahs an leopards co-existed with lions an survived that long, is because they go by the golden rule, if confronted by a lion they run, A tiger is a very proud animal an although he might win a few fights hear an there, same if it was a lone lion winning against another lone lion, the tiger would get riped to shreds via pride.
-
Animals dont live by the rule 1 on 1 its a human concept, they go by, only the strong survive. Thats why threw evolution they grouped up to form prides in africa, because unlike the tiger's area of habitat, they dont have 10s of thousands of herds that migrates yearly, which have high hatred for predators off springs, who kill cubs more than the other away around on migration terms. So prides were formed an has succsesfully taken down even the worlds mightiest an largest animal, the bull elphant along with any and every other animal in africa. Threw tactical battle like king leonidus used the hot gates as leverage in there superior fighting capabilities, same as lions do with there prides.
-
Tigers an lions co-exist in india, but asian's have pretty much eradictaed all asiatic lions, to near extinctions threw poachings and a few religous reasons as well, giving the tiger a better success rate in survival amoungs lions.

  1. In this Turkish Zoo incident some more details have to be said. It was a young 12 months white male Lion who was passing point A to point B. On is way he was surprise by the tiger’s single swipe between two bares that unfortunately cut its jugular vein. It’s very hard to make a powerful swipe between two bares, but it don’t take mush power to make a severe cut with very sharp claws.
