Natural Remedies for Cat Eye Discharge

Is there a natural remedy for cat eye discharge? People want to know as they search for answers using Google. I think that you’ll find that any applicable natural remedy is concerned with ameliorating the condition but not remedying it wholly.

What causes eye discharge? A clear discharge without pain or redness may be caused by the tear drainage system not working effectively. A discharge accompanied by pain is possibly caused by injuries to the cornea or a disease of the inner eye. A mucus discharge together with pink eye is caused by a bacterial infection causing inflammation called conjunctivitis. Pain will be apparent when the cat squints and avoids light and/or the area is tender to the touch.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eye’s protective mucous membrane. There will be redness and swelling and a watery mucoid (mucus) discharge.

If the cause is a conjunctivitis then the conventional remedy is perhaps the best and only truly effective remedy and that is antibiotics perhaps in conjunction with anti-inflammatory or antihistamine drops and lotions. This is not a natural remedy in the conventional meaning of the word. Read more on this here.

To help control bacterial infections using herbal remedies a herbal vet may recommend decoctions (a concentrated liquid containing the herb) of either fennel seed or Roman chamomile flower, Chamaemelum nobile. To bath sore eyes an infusion of Greater celandine, Chelidonium majus may be recommended.

Herbalism may provide a remedy to ameliorate the symptoms. A herbal veterinarian may recommend bathing the eyes with a lightly boiled decoction of any fennel seed to soothe inflamed allergic eyes. Foeniculum vulgare, eyebright, Euphrasia officinalis, or elder flower, Sambucus nigra.

Regarding homeopathic treatments Apis mel. can be used to bathe sore eyelids. Arsen. alb. is used for inflamed, watery eyes.

A discharge may be caused by a foreign body in the eye. The cure is to remove the foreign body. I remember my cat getting a piece of wheat stuck in her eye. There was a field opposite the house. I removed it using my fingers and she improved immediately.

A discharge may be caused by cancer of the nose or that region. There will be no natural remedy for that.

Allergies from dust and pollen and cigarette smoke can cause eye discharge. The remedy once diagnosed is to remove the cause.

A soft towel and warm water are used to wipe away a discharge.
