PoC Pays $200 For X-rays for Declawed Cat

This website makes a donation every month to a cat charity. The amount is based upon the number of comments at $.05 per comment. March’s donation has been carried over and combined with April’s donation, which at $.05 per comment works out at around $250 (USD). The calculation is based upon 2,536 comments for April making $126 USD to add to $123 USD for March 2014.

Tina Lavelle, an American lady living in Rapid City, South Dakota, authored a post about her declawed cat whose name is Mollie Ann. Tina thought Mollie may be suffering from pain in her paws due to declaw surgery, which occured when she was a kitten – many years ago. X-rays were needed to ascertain whether there were bone fragments in Mollie’s paws. Tina couldn’t afford the veterinarian’s fee for the x-rays.

PoC stepped in to assist financially. This website donated, direct to Tina, US$200 for the x-rays to be carried out by a carefully selected veterinarian who would then liaise with Dr Kirsten Doub of the Utah branch Paw Project, a specialist veterinarian at cat declaw repair surgery and also a specialist at reading x-rays of damaged paws due to careless declaw surgery.

That is the background picture. I’m very pleased that this website has donated $200 to Tina and at the time of dictating this post, we are awaiting feedback from her about the results of the x-rays. It is early days and therefore we should be patient for the results and whether further surgery is required which will be ascertained by Dr. Doub.

I will, of course, keep everybody posted regarding updates, which naturally depends upon Tina’s ongoing input. My thanks to everyone for your support in this project. Best wishes to Tina and Mollie.

  1. Update from Tina:

“Mollie Ann has an appointment for x-rays next Thursday 22nd of May! I will need to get the okay from the vet to video everything. Get ready, I am praying this makes a world of change for how cats are treated by veterinarians in the United States!”

  2. “P.O.C” besides being a practical “Cat Encyclopedia” is doing excellent cat charity. What surprises me is the high cost of Veterinary care and costs in the Western First World Country’s.

    • The price of this seems quite reasonable to me! In London if you want and vet to clean your cat’s teeth it’ll cost £400! It is the cost of the general anesthetic etc..

        • Jo, we have an update from Tina:

          Hi Michael!!!!

X-rays done this morning and Mollie did not need sedation!!!!!!!! The vet is extremely professional and Mollie did great. Her weight is fine and examination was perfect. She is in good shape and the x-rays are being sent to Dr. Doub in Utah. Do not know when I’ll hear back, but will let you know!!!

          Great.

  4. Thank you Michael and PoC for helping! I hope, with the help of Paws with Claws/Carla, writing a letter to the veterinarians Mollie will see and receive xrays from that she can be diagnosed properly and receive the treatment she needs

      • I hope the vets are treating this urgently! Now we know from the Paw Project Utah that all declawed cats are in pain anyway, the ones with bone fragments too, must be in agony from the botched surgery. It’s imperative Mollie is seen and hopefully treated quickly, because every day delayed is another day in pain for her.
