Upstate Veterinary Specialists Cancer Hospital
by Elisa Black-Taylor
I've located a bit of good news in the world of pets and would love to share it with all of you. Hopefully you will never need this service.
I'd like to tell you about Upstate Veterinary Specialists.
Upstate Veterinary Specialists is the first referral practice accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. They currently have two locations. One in the upstate of S.C. in Greenville and the other in Asheville, NC. Greenville, SC is a full service animal hospital while Asheville, NC offers an outpatient clinic. This is not a stand alone veterinary practice. They work only thru referrals from your regular vet to provide state of the art care for your pet.
The hospital treats diabetes, heart disease, hip dysplasia, canine Cushings and invertebral disc disease. However, their advanced treatment of cancer is what has earned them an A+ in the veterinary field.
They have the only MRI in the Carolina's made especially for dogs and cats. This technology alone has brought in pets who live in other parts of the country. I spoke with Amanda at the Greenville, SC location to verify pets from other states being treated there. She assured me that with a vet referral all pets, regardless of where they live, are welcome.
Once your veterinarian has referred you to UVS, please call (864)233-7650 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.and they will determine which office you should bring your pet to for treatment. You may also be asked to fax certain forms to them before the first visit. You can find those forms here.
Please take a look at this page on their website as it lists the 10 common signs of cancer.
Orthopedic evaluations are performed at both the Asheville and Greenville clinics, but surgery is only done at the full service hospital in Greenville, SC.
The veterinarians ask that you please not feed your pet after 10p.m. the night before the consultation as the surgery may be done the day of the consultation. Immediate surgery depends on whether and what kinds of tests may be needed.
Here's is a link for hotels and their room rates in the Asheville and Greenville areas that accept pets. There are several on their website and more can be found at the links below.
Now for the new pet MRI. UVS has several other imaging methods, but this machine is made specifically for small animals.
Once an MRI is taken using this special "pet" machine, the results are sent to the NC State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital where they are read by one of four board certified radiologists.
Most of the staff at both locations are licensed by the state. The veterinarians are chosen not only on their level of expertise but also on the compassion they show towards the pets. Their entire staff consists of animal lovers who care about you and your pet.
Some of the accomplishments of Upstate Veterinary Specialists include an annual dog walk appropriately called "Paws For A Cause". Teamed up with the American Cancer Society, this walk raises awareness for both human and animal cancer. The next walk is scheduled for October 2, 2010.
UVS accepts cash, check, and major credit cards. They also offer financing thru http://www.carecredit.com/
I wanted to bring this wonderful specialty clinic to your attention for two reasons. The first is the advanced technology they offer. The second is the cost of hotel rates in Greenville, SC or Asheville, NC. These cities offer lower rates than most parts of the country. There are also plenty of dining options and restaurants that offer delivery.
I realize many of my readers are too far away to use their hospital. I mainly wanted to get the information to you that the new pet MRI's are available. Pets are living longer thanks to medical technology that is now used in the veterinary field.
It's nice to know our four-legged companions are being recognized as family members.
This recognition is long overdue and I commend any service that provides the necessary care to enable our pets to live out long and healthy lives.
I'd like to provide this link in closing this story. Here you can read the many praises of some who have used their services.
