I really like old domestic cats. It is not because I’m old. I just think they have personality and there is something about them which attracts me. Thomas is a great example. He was surrendered to a shelter when his human guardian could no longer cope due to illness.
These are thumbnail photos:
Thomas arrived at the Baltimore County Animal Services facility where they looked for a rescue center to take him in. They didn’t have much hope because senior cats are difficult to adopt. In fact cats in the age brackets 10-13 have a hard time getting adopted so Thomas’s future looked uncertain.
The problem, and I understand this, is that adopters of elderly cats may have to fork out considerable expenses on medical bills. Thomas got lucky. A woman, Laura Cassiday, who is the same age as Thomas (26), took a liking to him when she saw his post on the Internet. She knew that he would have a hard time finding a home and took it upon herself to do the right thing and take care of him until the end of his life.
Laura is the webmail administrator and foster carer at Animal Allies Rescue Foundation. She called Baltimore County Animal Services and told them that they could stop looking for an adopter and picked him up the next morning. Rather than having him adopted through her rescue organisation she adopted him herself.
“We basically took him on knowing that he’d never get adopted for the sole purpose of saving his life,” Cassiday said.
Thomas is in good health except that he has hyperthyroidism and poor dental health, both typical elderly cat health issues. He is on medication for both. He is getting used to his new home. Laura has four other cats so it might take a little while for Thomas to get used to it all. This may be his first home after having lived with his previous owner for his entire life. Laura likes Thomas’s ‘old man’ personality.
Thomas likes his food. He looks skinny which goes with the territory for elderly cats. He spends most of the day sleeping and eating. I’m sure that Laura knows about the difficult decision which is likely to come in the not too distant future.
