On the basis that the Native American Indian did not keep cats, it is believed that the first short haired cats in America were from England accompanying the first immigrants into America in the early 1600s. The immigrants brought short haired and long haired cats. Eventually, the short haired cats became the American Shorthair and domestic short haired cats (non-pedigree cats).

The name was changed from "Domestic Shorthair" to "American Shorthair" in 1966 according the excellent book, Legacy of the Cat by Gloria Stephens and Tetsu (the famous cat photographer). Other sources say 1961 and 1965. The change in name reflected the “all American cat” that this breed had become. The change improved the fortunes of this breed distinguishing her from the non-registered, moggie, domestic cat. Although, it is said that the name, “Domestic Shorthair” is still used.
