Charlie's black gums

So black

Tabby stripes?

One of my two female cats is totally black. Her name is Charcoal, nicknamed Charlie. I believe she is an American Shorthair but I got her from a shelter at age 18 months and do not know her pedigree.

Not only is her fur black, without a single white hair, but her whiskers, nose, and paw pads are black. Even her gums are black. Is it rare for a cat to be so totally black?

In very bright sunlight her undercoat is slightly brownish, which gives her a charcoal hue, thus her name. And bright sunlight will reveal subtle variations in hue indicating an underlying tabby pattern.

Hi George... thanks for visiting and sharing. I think it is rare for a cat to be completely black as you describe.

I like your photographs too. If you email me larger format versions I might be able to use them on a page.

Pure Black cat
by: Kristen

Hello! I also have a pure black cat. Kasperitis is completely black. His pads, gums, palate, nose and pretty much everything is black. I have other black and almost black cats that are not completely black like he is. I have never seen another cat until yours that was totally black like mine. I wondered if he had some type of pedigree in him? Thanks for the info and the pic.

Charlie is a girl
by: George

Hello Finn. Yes, Charlie is a girl cat. Her given name is Charcoal, from the brownish cast that her undercoat gives off in sunlight. So, it seemed natural to nickname her Charlie. I told Charlie what nice things you said about her and she replied, "Meow."

Black and beautiful
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

Hi George. I assumed from your page about Cassie that Charlie was a boy, but now I see she is not. All black shorthairs always remind me of panthers - she is indeed beautiful too.
You probably already know how hard photographing an all black cat be, but you've shot some good ones for sure with the sunlight shining in her fur.

Your Charlie
by: George

Michael, your black cat, Charlie, is also beautiful. There are three pictures of him on the Black Cat page. Charlie has one leg missing. I have searched this for information about how Charlie lost his leg but have not found it on this huge website. Have you posted it anywhere? I'd like to read the story of Charlie and his special condition.

Spikey ridge of fur
by: George

Thanks, Michael. Yes, Charlie is striking. One thing I forgot to mention, which I think is remarkable, is her fur grows in an unusual way, which you may be able to see in the photographs. The growth of her fur parts and flows to either side under her chin and across her breast, then flows upward along her sides until it forms a spikey ridge that stands up and runs along her spine and continues along her tail. Is it not the case that cat's fur normally grows downward under the chin and downward from the spine and along it's sides?

You know
by: MIchael

Hi George. You know this already but I think Charlie is a great looking cat. Although all cats are equal in my eyes and all are beautiful.

That jet black all over look is unusual and I suspect if Charlie had been a purebred cat the breeder would have been very pleased indeed.
