Animal Serial Killer In Texas

By Elisa Black-Taylor

There’s an animal serial killer in Texas. I saw a recent article concerning this a few days ago. I traced the killings back to October 2011 when Houston resident, Lucy Garcia lost a border collie to a gunshot and a rottweiler to poisoning. Her horse was also stabbed to death in it’s stall and blood smeared on the wall.

Although it may be a different person committing these murders, back in January 2012, in the Houston area, three pit bulls were fatally shot and four suffered blunt force trauma to the head. From what I’ve gathered, those four also died from their injuries.

In an article dated July 11, 2012, the Houston authorities warned residents (especially those living in the Lazybrook area) that the animal serial killer had begun murdering cats.

Many of the cats were found mutilated or decapitated. They were placed where the owner would be sure to find the cat. The link to the original story can be found here. This case has gotten the attention of Crime Stoppers, who is now offering a reward of up to $5000 for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information should call the Houston Police Department Major Offenders Division at 713-308-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS(8477).

These cases are very disturbing. I don’t report on individual abuse cases as much as I used to. Not only are these cases heartbreaking-they scare me. I’m afraid to allow my cats outside for many reasons. Among them are wild animals attacks, vehicle hit and runs and neighbors who target practice for deer hunting using neighborhood pets. I know I’ve made many of my readers paranoid about allowing their cats to wander free. Sometimes a cat has to live outside. I worry about those cats.

My number one fear for the outside cat isn’t animal serial killers. Being hit by a car or killed by a wild animal are chances we have to take with an outdoor cat and are much more likely to end a cat’s life than a killer. The problem is growing and the manner in which the cats and dogs are killed show a twisted mind. They think up new forms of torture and act on them. This is much more horrific than just shooting an animal. Animal serial killers are popping up all over the place.

Regardless of reason, police and behavioral experts are afraid these killers will soon move on from pets to people. I did several articles on this subject a few years ago. My most famous is at Kids Killing Cats. This article has references to how many serial killers began with animal torture. I believe the statistics show close to 100%.

I feel sure there are animal torturers and killers everywhere. I found one case in Ohio and another in Arizona while researching this story. There’s a chance they feed off of media attention or they may just enjoy these perverted acts. Some just kill in quantity while others only kill a few. Only when the killing reaches a certain number do these stories tend to make headlines. And of course, since injured cats may go off alone to die, there could be many more cases we never hear about. The Houston animal killer likes for people to find his kills. This person has serious problems and could start on people at any time.

Readers, keep an eye on your pets. Report anything suspicious. Don’t believe this can’t happen where you live. Forewarned is forearmed.

  1. Some thoughts that come to my mind:

    • Do the gun laws in the USA result in more cat cruelty than in Europe as a percentage of national population?
    • Is there more animal cruelty in the USA generally?
    • Is animal cruelty just reported better and more often in the USA?
    • This does not even approach the mass, ongoing and entirely legal cat and dog cruelty that takes place in parts of China and Asia. The cat and dog meat market.
    • Cats and dogs don’t vote so this sort of story upsets decent people and animal lovers but does not really impact the politicians.
    • It is an expression of the deviant behavior of the human animal. ‘Animals’ are never deviant as far as I am aware. What happened to the human?

    • It certainly looks like most of these killers rely on their guns. One does read about poisonings but they are harder to detect for a bunch of reasons, and one hears also about people setting fire to cats. But I would say the fact that a big percentage of people out there have guns, parents for example, and therefore it becomes an option for a kid to try out daddy’s gun when he’s out. Having so many guns is clearly a terrible thing for the mental health of any country. It gives a feeling of power that is false and ludicrous if you analyse it. It actually creates a feeling of insecurity in the end. Everybody then gets at least one gun for self defence (‘just incase’) because everyone else has got one. And yet the gun lobby people say its a way of taking ones life into your own hands righteously to defend oneself and ones god given land. At least in Europe you don’t have to worry about somebody shooting your cat. It’s almost unheard of. This is because most people don’t even know someone with a gun. If a friend of mine showed me some gun in his closet for self defence I think it would freak me out more than anything. It just isn’t normal unless it’s a hunting type gun used for hunting, and even that is getting pretty rare these days. The general population just don’t like it or want it. But hunters are usually countryside people who don’t run into many people who aren’t the same as them so they don’t really have to face the judgements of the mainstream populous. Guns are clearly bad and theh US is practically built on the notion of having your own gun – I”d have to research that to be more exact but I guess it means they will never be able to outlaw them either.
