Azrael cartoon cat at master's feet
Azrael Cartoon Cat Pedigree: This cat was "owned" (I prefer "kept") by the sorcerer Gargamel who was the nemesis of the small Smurfs. This little brown cat behaved like a cat in that he walked on all fours and was unable to speak in human language. That is unusual in the cartoon cat world. Azrael was a small brown cat living with his master (and later on in the series with Scruple) in a castle. He went were his master went and assisted his master in capturing and/or destroying the Smurfs.
Azrael sometimes spoilt the efforts of Gargamel by becoming too excited and meowing. Azrael was created by a Belgian cartoonist Pierre "Peyo" Culliford in 1957. His debut came in the European comic magazine Spirou.
Hanna-Barbera produced six prime time Smurfs specials. The first and best one was The Smurfs Springtime Special. Gargamel thinks he can create gold by boiling Smurfs in molten lead.
The Azrael cartoon cat voice was provided by Don Messik. In the real world, Azrael is one name for the Devil.
