Azrael cartoon cat at master's feet

Azrael Cartoon Cat Pedigree: This cat was "owned" (I prefer "kept") by the sorcerer Gargamel who was the nemesis of the small Smurfs. This little brown cat behaved like a cat in that he walked on all fours and was unable to speak in human language. That is unusual in the cartoon cat world. Azrael was a small brown cat living with his master (and later on in the series with Scruple) in a castle. He went were his master went and assisted his master in capturing and/or destroying the Smurfs.

Azrael sometimes spoilt the efforts of Gargamel by becoming too excited and meowing. Azrael was created by a Belgian cartoonist Pierre "Peyo" Culliford in 1957. His debut came in the European comic magazine Spirou.

Hanna-Barbera produced six prime time Smurfs specials. The first and best one was The Smurfs Springtime Special. Gargamel thinks he can create gold by boiling Smurfs in molten lead.

The Azrael cartoon cat voice was provided by Don Messik. In the real world, Azrael is one name for the Devil.

Actually azarel was a boy in the original comics done by Peyo. He became a she in the cartoon series and Azarel is the name of the Archangel of death, not the devil.

Azrael is actually a girl cat. I found this out after watching an early episode where Azrael falls in love with a stray tomcat. The tomcat looked male enough to me so I'm assuming that this fact is correct. In one of the cartoons that I remember, Gargamel referred to Azrael as a "good girl". So, I am assuming that she was a she.. Perhaps some of the cartoon show creators thought of Azrael as a female cat and made him one in the TV series. But in the original French books (all of which I have and have read repeatedly), Azrael is frequently referred to as an "il" (that's "he" in French).

I love the whole sketch! I guess it would have been cool if it was on TV daily. That would have been so much fun!
