Declawing is a very hot topic on this site, and since discovering this site I've come to realise that the passion and commitment portrayed within its visitors (particularly those who are regulars) is astonishing.

Everything I know about declawing came from here, and with out this site I would not be aware of the cruel reality of which results from declawing.

When I made this video I thought long and hard about what I wrote, and I believe that the text within this video is very accurate. Everyone look at your cat(s) right now, do they look like they're in pain? Do they look like they're suffering? Do they look like they're miserable?

Well, I know mine doesn't which is why I came to the conclusion that cats who are NOT declawed don't typically go through pain or misery, yes they do experience pain in certain situations and circumstances, but it isn't a constant thing, I hope you know what I'm trying to say, because I'm not sure if I'm making any sense...

Below is the video I made, it's very basic, but I believe that it does get the point across and it does promote Ruth and Babz's petition. The song I chose was basically just to set the mood, it's not really of any significance.... Also, I must warn you that there are a few graphic photos which may upset some people.

Here is the link to the video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Azy-no3un6o

Here is the link to the petition: Petition

(-If you haven't signed it yet, I urge you do so. Because to me every signature brings us one closer to ensuring a happy and safe life to cats everywhere.)

Anyone has permission to use this video.

Finn,
Ah I see, yes, that would have gotten the message across a lot more effectively, you're right though, the information should have been inside the video. Especially for when the video isn't being viewed on YouTube, this page is the perfect example of that.

Tracey,
When telling I've seen the shocked face too, which is usually found along with a "why would anyone do that?!", well, that's the question I ask myself everyday... Why would anyone do that?

Also, thank you for your kind words.

Hi Maggie. You are right of course. You can't have everything in a short video.
What I meant was simply that the line instead could have been phrased something like 'Slicing off the outer joint'. But I must admit at that time I had not read the video description at YouTube. 😉

Thank you, Finn. =) I did put that information on the video's description, but I didn't put it on the actual video because I already had too much text in there... That is just one of many details that I missed out simply for that reason.

May 28, 2010 Hi Maggie, Brilliant!
by: Tracey (England)

I agree with Ruth; when I've told people the look on their face is utter horror!

I've heard comments like 'They can't defend themselves!' or 'why do they do that? Its awful!'

This is what I can't grasp! The vets know its barbaric animal cruelty! Do you think they know their time's nearly up and that they are de-clawing as many cats as they can to rake in the money!?

Brilliant video though Maggie; I just hope that it hits home to those that care.

May 28, 2010 My two cents...
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

Hi Maggie. Very good work! Please allow me to put forward one minor suggestion.
The fact that usually shocks people the most is not mentioned, namely that declawing means cutting off the entire outer joint on each toe. You say
There are two ways to declaw a cat...
Slicing off the claw...
Or burning it with a laser...
Actually those people, who believe it's a minor thing like removing a nail, will not learn any better from that. Yes, the pictures are ugly, but I'm not sure everybody will look close enough to notice how much is sliced off.
But tell them about the joint while they are watching the pictures and they'll be as disgusted as we were, when we first learned about it.
Just my two cents - you have still made a greqat little video. 😉

Michael, you must be a bit disappointed to leave, sounds like you had a great time! Oh well, I'm sure you'll be happy to be back home in London, and your cats will be so happy to see you too!

Ruth, there are so many ignorant people in regard to declawing. I had a look around on Yahoo! Answers last night and the amount of stupid ingnorant people I found was enough to make me sick! Stupid stupid people! It makes me so mad to see people encouraging declawing!!! They're so selfish too, as long as the humans are happy who cares about the cats!!! I think on one (I can't remember if it were on your blog or Yahoo) a person was basically saying "Yes declawing hurts, but I've had my finger nails removed and the pain goes away." If only declawing was the same as having finger nails removed!! I've had an entire finger nail fall off myself, it hurts like hell but is nothing in comparision to declawing...

May 27, 2010 At Oklahoma airport
by: Michael

I am at Oklahoma airport right now. It is 4:30 pm - flight at 6:25pm and it goes to Minneapolis from where I get a flight to London - exhausting! Then back to normal but I had a great time. The space etc. And Martin and Kathrin were fantastic hosts.

Hi Maggie, I collect stuff all the time for my blogs about ignorance and cruelty,if you come across any. It's incredible just how much there is and the trouble is these ignorant people 'advise' others and so it goes on. Yahoo Answers is a hotbed of it, it's very hard to keep up with trying to educate on there !
I mean, things like someone saying 'my cat bites me what can I do?' and they choose as best answer 'declaw it'
Declaw a cat for biting ???? Are they for real ???? The ones like 'It's no big deal declawing a cat' make my BP go sky high !!
Yes it would be good if more join our new group, we've 79 members in our old Claws group which is soon finishing as they are starting to charge on there, we hope they will all join our new one.
Babz has been busy transfering the important stuff and we can all add to it now.
There are quite a few anti declaw groups on facebook too we are members of, some of those might join us.
There's a saying 'there is strength in numbers' so hopefully one day soon, together we will win the battle and declawing will be BANNED.

Thank you, Michael. Take all the time you need, you're heading back to London soon, aren't you?

Ruth, you're exactly right, I was reading through your blog this afternoon and I couldn't believe what I saw. The way people talk about cats is disgusting, it's like they're toys that anyone can do anything to, regardless of the fact that they ARE in pain and people ARE aware of that... It was so sad to read... It isn't hard to respect a cat, why do these people struggle so much? Respect is what humans lack mostly in, do you think that if people respected cats they would declaw them? No, they wouldn't!!

Also, if it's okay I would like to put the group's link on here so more people can join. I had a look around on there today, and it's stacked with information, it would be nice to get people talking about and discussing declawing in there. (I also love how you can have your own profile!)

Yes well done Maggie ! That is a brilliant video, sometimes I find pictures get the message over to some people where words don't, so we need to educate them all the ways we can.
It's amazing how many people don't know that declawing still happens routinely in the USA and Canada. The look of shock and horror on the faces of the people here when I've told them, makes me wonder why the people in those countries where it happens think it's acceptable.
I couldn't believe it myself when I first found out.I still can't come to terms with why some people get a cat and don't know they need their claws.Or how the declaw vets do this cruel operation every day as if it's not abusing the cats.
It upsets me that some people even know the full horror of declawing but think it's worth the cat suffering and risking all sorts of physical and mental problems. It's as if they are saying cats are not important, if something goes wrong we can always get another one.
I can't bear the thought of cats suffering from being deliberately crippled this way and people doing nothing about it.
3,599 signatures on our petition so far show a lot of people care and the comments some make are really good.
So WHY don't the AVMA and the declaw vets take notice ? They must know full well the strength of feeling against their cruelty.
