This public house in Bristol, UK, is the only cat pub in the UK as far as I am aware. There are 15 cats in pub (there were 24 but that was too many the landlord said) and they lounge around just as they would if they were in a cat café.

The pub is called the Bag O’Nails. The landlord, 44-year-old Luke Daniels, said that his customers mostly accept the cats or are positive about their presence. There are some cases of allergies! But what the heck.

All the cats were born in the pub. One was born during quiz night in a crisp (chips) box.

Having read that piece of information it would seem that the landlord is not neutering or spaying his cats. It is a mild and odd form of cat hoarding perhaps.

I cannot condone the landlord actions. As intriguing as the cat pub is, if the landlord is not adopting rescue cats to populate the pub and if they are all born in the pub it can only mean that he is letting the cats breed. Has anyone else got a better assessment?

The cats give this traditional pub a special homely feel which is the way pubs should be. Students who live in university accommodation nearby frequent the place.

      • I think you’re right. We go in for cafes more here. I have allergies to cats but that’s never stopped me either. I’d go and buy something just to be able to sit there with the cats. Yeah, this might be a mild form of cat hoarding but I’ve seen much much worse.

  1. I would love to visit — someday maybe!! (I’m in the USA). . .but, yes, Michael, it appears to me that the kitties are not *fixed* either. . . I would love to see him spay/neuter and adopt more as the older ones pass on. . . but the *cat cafe* presence is pawsome!! ♥♥♥

    • He must be a cat lover who just let things happen. The cats look very much at home and they add to the pub’s atmosphere. It makes me think there could be more cat pubs. Pubs in Britain are dying out. Perhaps cat pubs will revive them 😉
