Samantha Zychowski was sentenced May 23 and was banned from caring for, owning or residing with animals along with a $250 fine.

The cat and dog found were lucky the staff at the facility heard sounds coming from inside the storage unit and called the police. Both were taken to a vet where they were found to be dehydrated and distressed.

The cat, who was wrapped in duct take to keep it quiet,  also suffered corneal injuries. It’s believed the cat was injured as it struggled to free itself for a long period of time.

Calgary Humane Society’s Senior Manager of Animal Cruelty Investigations, Brad Nichols stated in an interview with CTV News

“This was a case of extreme negligence. The intent to keep the cat quiet by duct-taping its head was callous and extremely dangerous. That the cat was found, let alone survived this incident buried under personal effects in a plastic bin, with its head taped, is incredibly fortunate. The outright ban on owning, caring for or residing with animals for 15 years is significant.”

The privilege of being around animals should be taken away in all animal cruelty convictions. Let’s just hope ‘the powers that be’ will keep a check on Ms. Zychowski to ensure she stays away from animals.
