Chanel #5

Chanel #5

I got Chanel ("Chani Cat") after my previous cat, Topaz, died of kidney failure. I was in mourning for him, and knew I had to have another cat. I had read about the Maine Coon and wanted a big cat, but couldn't afford a purebred. I did a search and found a rescue organization that had a cat available for adoption they had labeled as a Calico Maine Coon. I know she's not purebred, but she sure has the sweet personality!

She's beautiful, and was found by Animal Control roaming the streets. She was going to be euthanized, but the Animal Control Officer gave her to the rescue center to find her a home instead. She cost a whole $35, but has been so worth it! She's very loving (although not a lap cat at all), has a pretty voice, and just falls over on her side if you talk to her.

I can't believe someone let her get away. She weighs 12 pounds, but is a baby doll to me. She has helped me deal with the pain of losing my other cat, and I really love and appreciate her. She's the fifth cat I've had since living in my present house; hence, her name, Chanel #5.

Can somebody tell me what kind of cat I have?

by Eleni
(Cyprus)

She's a stray, when I saw her I knew I had to have her but I'm really curious what kind of breed she is. Can somebody help me out? Thanks!

Eleni

Hi Eleni... You have a Turkish Van cat. She has the classic Van markings.

Although, as she has no documented pedigree she cannot, formally, be called a Turkish Van; as a cat breed that is part of the cat fancy.

But in my opinion she is still a Turkish Van. Before the cat fancy ever existed there were cats like yours in Turkey and when discovered they were "developed" by the cat fancy into a recognised breed.

Your girl cat is just as much a Turkish Van as a registered one, probably. The genetic makeup - genotype - is probably very similar and possibly more genuine or better related to the original Turkish Van cats than those of the cat fancy.

Thanks for showing us your cat.

Molly a Short Hair American

Molly Molly finds her bed anywhere on the couch and even in the fridge

I found Molly outside hiding under a truck. She was about 6 weeks old. I had four other Kitties. She blended right in. Although when I call them all to eat, she came, but she would not allow them near the food. The other cats were puzzled. Finally she got the idea that it was okay for all five of them to eat at the same time.

Funny thing though, after all her spitting and growling, someone decided to sniff her behind that made things worst, there was boxing and spitting. Molly turned out to be the most friendly cat I've ever had. She's very likeable. The youngest of the lot, but also the largest.

I recognized her breed by the length of her tail. Millie looks like she might be An American Short Hair too. BTW, Molly practice CPR(that's what I call it) on me, as soon as I lie on the couch, she would jump up turn around and starts to her kneading, just like if she know what it means, her paws are very muscular and strong too.
