Cat and dog owners using coronavirus as a reason to put off going to their veterinarian — 6 Comments

  1. Veterinarians in my area aren’t allowing a pet owner to enter the building with their pet. You have to call in advance and tell them you’re coming. Someone will come out to your vehicle and take your often terrified animal inside for treatment. Communication will be made by phone as the veterinarian recommends the treatment.

I, for one, will not be taking Sealy back in until things are relaxed. He came very close to a heart attack on his last visit when the vet tech had to draw blood. His organs are starting to go downhill. He’s at least 19. I’m not going to put him through the stress of blood work for something that’s not going to improve. He’s just old.

A lot of us have cats who go ballistic when separated from their person. Clinics have stopped routine surgery (this includes TNR in a lot of places). My daughter has a cat who SCREAMS when she isn’t within sight. Who wants to put their cat through that?

I’ll be in serious trouble if I do have to see a vet and have to communicate by phone because I can’t hear well on the phone. I’ll focus more on a healthy diet and prevention.

      • Sealy still has that famous appetite of his. He follows me around like a puppy for his wet food. I remember when he came in 2012 he was eating 5 packs a day.

I’ve gotten good at judging when I have an emergency. I don’t do the Facebook advice routine. I call the vet as I’m heading out the door.

  2. I would also point out that the increasing unemployment rates probably have a sad influence in that people worry more about keeping a roof over their head and themselves and their pets fed over that yearly vet visit.
