Can cats get the urge to pee because they are excited? I have a feeling that they can but I also believe that it is rare. It had never occurred to me before I fostered Downton. He is a young male cat, about 9 months old. He behaves a bit like a kid. You can tell he is a “subadult”, in technical language.
Today he was in a particularly excitable mood. He slept with me all night and was ready for action when I hauled my sorry backside out of bed.
When I came back from buying the newspaper he was pleased to see me. He raced off to the room where the litter tray is but peed on the carpet about 2 feet from it. I spotted him and stopped him. He raced off and I tidied up and also cleaned that tiny section of carpet with an enzyme cleaner and then covered the area with the litter tray.
My feeling is that judging by his behaviour he sort of lost his cool and his routine and had an urge to pee which was almost as strong as if he had cystitis which he positively has not got. He is the picture of rude health. But when cats have cystitis they pee anywhere because the urge takes them and they can’t control it.
What made me think that his slightly wild peeing may be due to excitement is because he was very excited (racing around) and when humans are excited (combined, perhaps, with a bit of trepidation) they get the urge to pee sometimes.
I have discovered that there is such a thing as “submissive urination” in dogs and it is linked to excitement urination. Dogs do it to appease us (the master and leader). I wonder if cats do this sometimes? I doubt it.
So what is the reason behind humans feeling like a pee when they are excited/anxious etc.? I can’t find a good answer! It is probably to simply remove waste at a time when the body needs to be at its most efficient. You don’t want to be carrying baggage around.
If there is such a thing as a cat peeing because of excitement then the reason might be something similar.
