Cat suffered minor injuries after becoming trapped in the metal component of a reclining sofa

This is the distressed face of a Persian cat named MyLady who suffered numerous minor injuries after becoming trapped in the metal component of a reclining sofa.

Cat trapped under recliner. You can see the injury.

The poor kitty’s cries could be heard over the phone as his owner contacted an animal rescue team in the city of Munich in the southern German state of Bavaria.

His owner pleaded for help to come as quickly as possible. According to ViralTab News

“Please come quickly, my cat is stuck under the couch. It looks as though he is trapped in the metal parts and is bleeding and scared.”

MyLady’s owner

MyLady suffered cuts and scrapes, a broken tooth (from trying to bite himself free) and fur loss. The rescue team says his eyes were wide with fear and he was covered in blood around his neck.

Being trapped caused injuries. Recliners are dangerous to cats.

A veterinarian was part of the rescue team. MyLady had to be sedated and the team had to carefully tilt the sofa and release the cat from between two metal arms.

An examination showed no ribs or internal organs were affected. MyLady was fortunate to have only minor injuries and the rescue team was fortunate not to have suffered injuries from a terrified cat during the rescue.

P.S. From Michael. It appears that the owner took the photograph of her cat when trapped under the recliner. That appears to have been her/his first instinct. I find that strange because it would not enter my head to take a photograph under these circumstances. The focus would be on releasing my cat.

I don’t think that recliners should be in homes where there are cats, kittens, puppies and small dogs. Period. They should be banished from these homes as they are too dangerous.

  1. Thanks Pam. I could not agree more. It is too easy for cats to be hurt by recliners and the manufacturers do nothing to protect cats. They design them as cat, kitten and puppy proof.

  2. My rescue, Carolina Cats, has included kitten-proofing leaflet with adoption packs for every cat and kitten since 1995 that includes a warning about recliners, and this and orher dangers are also pointed out during the adoption process. Kittens can absolutely be killed in recliners. Elisa – I’m guessing MyLady’s owner took the picture to give the emergency crew/veterinarian a heads up on what they were going to have to deal with.
