‘Modified wedge’ terminology used in the cat fancy (infographic)

NFC (Norwegian Forest Cat) head is an equilateral triangle

This is an infographic on the well-used cat fancy phrase ‘modified wedge’. It is used all the time in cat association breed standards. I see it used a lot in the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) breed standards and I’ve extracted some examples for the infographic below. The cat fancy administrators were drawn into using the phrase ‘modified wedge’ because they had to find a way to describe the head and face shape of their registered cats. Fundamentally, the wedge shape fits the feline head shape but only in a very general way which is why it is ‘modified’!

‘Chinchilla’, its meaning in the cat world (infographic)

Chinchilla Persian miniature cat

The word ‘chinchilla’ is used a lot in the cat fancy and it is associated with Persian cats. Usually not the extreme bred, flat-faced variety but the traditional doll-faced types. But there appears to be a certain flexibility in the meaning and use of the word which I have illustrated in the infographic. In essence ‘chinchilla’ refers to a type of coat in the cat world, specifically the cat fancy. The name has been taken from the name of a South American rodent with the same coat.

Difference between ‘purebred’ and ‘pedigree’ infographic

Picture of Persian cat at the seaside near beach

Well, I thought I’d do an infographic on this common and slightly knotty topic. It comes up a lot and oftentimes people use the word ‘pedigree’ to mean ‘purebred’ and vice versa. And as you can see, in the infographic, they can be correct but it does not always follow that a purebred cat is also a pedigree cat. Please check out the infographic as to why. Comments are welcome. P.S. random-bred cats or moggies have not been selectively (artificially) bred to have the same parents and grandparents as they are created through natural selection. Although because sometimes they live on an island or are confined to a space, they can become purebred through natural inbreeding as mentioned for the Bahraini Dilmun in the infographic.

Albinism in cats infographic

albino cat eye color

This is an infographic which summarises albinism in cats. Rarely you will see albino wild and domestic cats. You will see quite a lot of people confusing cats that are completely white with blue eyes or odd-eye colour caused by the dominant white gene and albino cats with light-blue to pink eyes. The eyes are a good way to tell the difference. There are more articles with a reference to albinism below the infographic

Chartreux Cat Infographic

Chatreux cat

Perhaps the most significant two facts about this cat breed is that it is France’s only purebred cat and the breed standard has remained untouched throughout the breed’s existence in the cat fancy which started in the late 1800s. This is because the intention is to maintain the original appearance. You can see this …

Are American Wirehair cats hypoallergenic?

American Wirehair

I am sorry to say that the American Wirehair is not hypoallergenic. ‘Hypoallergenic’ in respect of cat breeds means a breed that has a reduced effect on people who are allergic to cats. There is nothing in the reference books or anecdotally which encourages me to say that they are. This is a pretty …
