NEWS/OPINION: Something good has come out of the coronavirus crisis. In fact, I would argue, that a lot of good has come out of it (and will do) although at present it looks extremely dire. In February I wrote about the city of Shenzhen and how they were preparing to ban the eating of cat and dog meat.
It appears that the coronavirus pandemic has hastened the city’s administrators in their decision to ban this long-standing custom. Shenzhen is a large metropolis adjacent to Hong Kong and a technology hub. I believe that the ban comes into force on May 1, 2020. Perhaps the city’s location near Hong Kong has helped to enligten them.
The city administrators made an interesting comment about the ban:
This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilisation.
This hints at an admission that the eating of dog and cat meat in China is uncivilised. It certainly is. My God, it’s about as brutal as it can get. Don’t think that it’s the same as eating livestock in the West because it isn’t. If you want to find out what it is like watch some videos or read some articles on how they kill the animals before they cook them and you will understand what I mean.
We have to hope, and indeed pray, that this is the first step in a general ban across the country of eating cat and dog meat which is distinctly out of step with the rest of the world. However, I’m not hopeful because I have read that the president of China, Xi Jinping, believes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). He thinks it actually works and he believes that the bile harvested from live bears in tiny cages where they can’t move for years can help cure people of the Covid-19 infection.
The harvesting of bile from bears is simply horrific. Please look it up if you want to gain some knowledge about it. And the president of China believes that it is all right to treat bears in this most cruel way. There is no evidence to support the belief that bear bile can do any good in the treatment of this coronavirus infection.
Therefore, I have to conclude that the Communist Party of China (CPC) is still very backward thinking which presents a barrier to advancement into civilisation (a reference to the above quote) in general. I also understand that despite a temporary ban on the 20,000 live animal markets in China as a result of the pandemic, some of them have reopened while the pandemic rages across the rest of the world and while China appears to be basking in their successful efforts to quash it.
Do believe the Chinese statistics? I certainly don’t. It is unpalatable to know that what is believed to be the cause of the pandemic i.e. live animal markets in China, are reopening while the rest of the world is still fighting with this highly destructive disease which is destroying lives economically and actually.
NOW IF YOU HAVE THE STOMACH FOR IT, HERE IS SOME MORE ON CAT AND DOG MEAT WITH PICTURES. HORRIBLE.
