Rose’s thoughts on another page about Pine Grove Animal Hospital inspired this article and poster:
‘Just been mulling this over and while we are right to congratulate vets who stop declawing we should also thank those who have never declawed and take our business to them if they are near us as they have not caused countless cats to suffer.
It’s like the prodigal son though getting praised while good people rarely get thanked for being good’
She is right!
There are some vets who have never ever declawed a cat in their entire career even though it is legal to do so in their country.
They deserve praise for sticking to their sworn oath to cause no animal to suffer. They deserve thriving practices and to retire when the time comes, knowing they have done good.
What about the vets who have stopped declawing?
Yes, they deserve praise too for doing so but they also need to answer the question, why did they think it was acceptable to ever declaw cats at all? The stock answer is of course that it keeps cats in their homes. Well we all know it doesn’t !
Maybe the client threatened it was declaw or death? Are people who say that, really fit to have a cat in their power? I think not!
Some vets justify declawing by saying the client would go to another vet if they refused. So, two wrongs don’t make a right, why didn’t they look to their conscience and set a good example to those other vets by refusing to declaw?
The brickbats go to the vets who still declaw cats even now. The truth is known by many people that it isn’t actually ‘just’ the claws removed (bad enough) it’s the entire toe ends amputated, but some people don’t know this and some declaw vets still hide that fact and forbid their staff to tell clients the truth. They deserve a very large brickbat!
But the vets who deserve the BIGGEST brickbat ever are the ones who advertise declawing with neutering packages or declawing with discount. They can only be doing that to make money, no other reason. Therefore they must hate cats so much that they don’t care when a healthy kitten going in to be declawed leaves their clinic as a disabled for cat for life.
It is beyond my comprehension how any vet who declaws cats can hold up his/her head in the company of the vets who stick to their sworn oath to cause no animal to suffer.
