  1. “We are more emotionally mixed up.” is a great way to bottom-line it… more being the operative word there. We like to put things in black and white terms, but I think there’s still some room for a little “matter of degree” here. I think if animals had absolutely no concept of death, they might not try to avoid it so desperately when they are close to it. By extension, I think survival isn’t just a positive, but also an avoidance of a very real final negative. I think an organism has only to witness it once to be able to conceptualize it, and maybe it’s inherent… there are lots of desires seemingly programmed in at the genetic level. Again matter of degree and how the animal makes some kind of sense of it… and I agree not as mind-boggling as we do.
