Dog purposefully rescues exhausted cat from water despite cat objecting to assistance

This is a fantastic little video. It is hard not to come to the conclusion that this dog deliberately set out to get this cat out of the water. The desperately tired cat is clinging onto some object half submerged and when the dog approaches to try and help, the cat smacks him (with her claws out) around his muzzle. She does this a few times. Nonetheless, the dog presses on determined to help, jumping into the water underneath the cat and lifts her out of the water.

You could argue that the whole thing is accidental and just happened by chance. But that argument wouldn’t hold water for me! The acts of this dog appear to be deliberate. If that is the case then he or she realises that the cat is in peril and sees a way to help. What he does is very effective and it worked brilliantly. It just makes you think about cat and dog intelligence. It makes you think about cat and dog emotions and how they perceive the world and perceive others.

I hope that it makes people perceive cats and dogs in a slightly more enlightened way by which I mean a more sympathetic way, which in turn should mean that some people stop being cruel to them.

P.S. For simplicity I have referred to the cat as ‘she’ and the dog as ‘he’. I could have reversed the genders. The choice is arbitrary.

The video may disappear because I don’t control it. It is embedded on this site.

Here is the same video on Facebook in case the YouTube version disappears (they often do!).

  2. I agree the cat was exhausted, to the point of having only enough energy to fend off what she thought was possibly a fatal interest by the dog. I’m sure she was relieved to finally get out. She might have been moments away from giving up. Good dog. Very good dog.
