Dog versus cat: Let’s talk injuries, torture, death and equal punishment under felony animal cruelty laws

I sincerely hope this will be a good discussion article on companion animals being injured and tortured and dying from those injuries.

I won’t go into sentencing because we all know those who harm dogs get a harsher punishment than those who harm cats. Every state now considers animal cruelty a felony but that doesn’t mean the abuser will be punished if convicted.

First, let us go back to 2015 when William Leonard Dodson was arrested in Charleston, South Carolina in the abuse case of Caitlyn, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix who was found with electrical tape wrapped around her muzzle. His bond was set at $50,000 and he got a lengthy prison sentence. Keep in mind we’re talking about a dog who didn’t die from her injuries.

Fast forward to April 2019 when a Cameron County, Pennsylvania man is out on $5,000 bond after being charged with felony animal torture and a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals. PoC covered that article here. “Beauty” had to be euthanized due to her injuries. By the way, Keaun Kennedy, 21, of Driftwood is already out of jail and enjoying his freedom.

One of the biggest cat cruelty cases to make the news this week comes out of Plymouth, Pennsylvania where a sick bastard is accused of attaching food to a fish hook which is attached to string. The man is accused of feeding neighborhood cats, hook and all.

From what I understand there is a suspect being investigated. So what? If and when he’s charged, he’ll be released on a small bond. Just wait and see. Because that’s what happens to cat abusers.

There’s a dog case I’m watching right now and I’m curious how the abuser will be treated if and when an arrest is made. Booby-trapped chicken skins laced with needles and toothpicks were discovered recently, strung up with fishing line, in an alleyway on the popular dog walk route between Oak Road and Earlwood Drive in Alderholt (a large village and civil parish in the East Dorset district of Dorset, England).

I’d like for you all to do an experiment using Google search engine. Type in “dog abuser held on $50,000 bond.” Go ahead. You’ll find page after page after page. Apparently, $50,000 is a good bond for a dog abuser.

Now do another Google search and type in “cat abuser held on bond.” It’s extremely rare to find a bond of over $5,000. most are in the $1,500-$2,500 range.

Dog abusers are getting $50,000 bonds for dogs that survived abuse and cat abusers are getting $5,000 or less bond for cats who died from their injuries.

Why? Are dogs considered more valuable than cats? Both are companion animals. What kind of crap are we teaching our kids when we show dog abusers get a harsher punishment than a cat abuser. An abuser is an abuser and most graduate to harming a spouse or family member.

There is one lesson we should take from this. Cats AND dogs shouldn’t be left unguarded outside because the world is full of sickos who know that animal law rarely hands down a punishment that fits the crime. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the poisoned meat meant for dogs.

As for the three cats who ate the fish hook bait, only one was found and surgery was performed. That cat was only hours away from dying. The other two cats haven’t been seen or trapped and are most likely dead by now.

I think it’s sad that a case can go to trial with witnesses and evidence and the perpetrator can still get away with it.

  1. Yes, dogs are valued more highly than cats. The reason is that dogs look up to humans as their leader while cats are independent and see humans as equals. Humans like to be looked up to by animals because humans are so damned arrogant. This makes humans more generous towards dogs in terms of value i.e. the dog is a servant to their human master and the human rewards the dog with increased value. Both with cats and dogs the bottom line is that humans treat companion animals as possessions with a relative value. That’s my theory.

    • I’ve also thought that some men will target cats because they have traditionally been seen as a woman’s pet. This could come in handy when you’re pissed at your mom or your girlfriend. A good method of control over another person, or so I would imagine.

  2. oh you really want to get me started!!! If you also want to add that there was the torture of Sage the cat in Utah. What a horrific torture by someone so evil and demented that words could not describe and although they had the opportunity for the evidence, law enforcement never pursued it. Let’s also talk about hoarding. Oh how it really makes the news and stirs up the country when a dog hoarder is reported. For instance in Cabarrus County. This week the case of a hoarder of dogs made the news. Oh, AC went it and wanted to make sure the public knew. However several of us have reported a cat hoarder in this county for years, horrible neglect. One lady even went so far as to contact the state and she may have driven out to Raleigh. However the man was cited nothing and kittens continued to lay and die from distemper and I am guessing they still are to this day. Then the case of the cats behind Wal Mart that some paid company came in and trapped them, witnesses confirmed they did. However no explanation from Wal Mart management yet on who it was and where these cats are that they “stole”. Yes, they are considered stolen cats. I could go on and on and on. It is up to US to push for more news coverage and blast it to the world. Even wildlife has more protection under the law. What a farce. I will fight for all and it makes me sick to my stomach and causes many sleepless nights to know that our law enforcement and judicial system can choose and pick when to apply the law. Get my pulpit. I feel a sermon coming on.

    • Let us also not forget the railroad riders that tortured the cat in Ashville. Walked away. The mind cannot even grasp how that cat suffered. I say it is time for an underground who can handle these situations.
