Domestic cat inside building leaps like a caracal to catch a flying bat

I have decide that this is a bat. This ginger tabby is inside what appears to be a public covered area of some sort. Perhaps it is part of a shopping mall or a transport system (rail or air). Also inside this area is a trapped bat (or bird). The bat wants to escape and the cat is feverishly interested in catching it. What an opportunity for a cat for a bit of excitement and he shows it. He chases wildly around and then conveniently the bat is on a path towards the cat who jumps up like the famed caracal to catch the bat in mid-flight.

The caracal is the world’s best feline vertical jumper in terms of catching flying birds. They specialise in it. It is a video which could only have been created because a couple of ‘intruders’ happened to be inside a public building at the same time. They both should not have been there I suspect unless someone – a caretaker – let the cat inside deliberately to catch the bat as a convenient way of getting rid of it.

The movements of the flying creature – sharp turns etc. – indicate a bat to me but I happy to be corrected. The video is unclear.

The domestic cat has all the attributes of its wild cousins. They are not always demonstrated especially in full-time indoor environments but they are there ready to be expressed.

  2. I watched it a number of times and this looks like a bird to me. I had bats in my trees in my front yard and they are impossible to follow let alone catch. My cats sat on my truck at dusk to watch them, and that’s all they could do or basically just feel the breeze they made. The only way I could see them well was to take flash pictures. Bats are really, really fast and so adept at missing each other in flight that it’s no problem dodging the cats. Yeah, that was a bird in the video… a dove I think. All they really should have done is open the doors for it. The photo of the Caracal jumping is phenomenal.
