A Kentucky man remains in jail without bond after he beat a cat to death with a baseball bat then held his family at bay with a loaded rifle.

A warrant was issued Thursday and executed on Friday for Brently Ray Vaught, 35, who remains in the Russell County Detention Center. Vaught is charged with animal torture, wanton endangerment and domestic violence stemming from violent actions toward family members and pets over a four-month span.

The domestic violence charge stems from Vaught holding the rifle to the heads of a woman and her 4-year-old son and punching the woman.

This story isn’t that unusual. It just made the headlines. Every day there are relationships where one person holds a weapon on the other, where children are involved and where the family pet is injured or killed. There are even cases where the family pet survives after witnessing the murder of their owner.

I wonder what the odds are this woman and child will take this man back into the home, should he be released on bond or not receive a prison sentence? At the very least, child protective services should be involved in this case.

  1. How do we claim to be civilised when we have so much domestic abuse happening in every culture in the world?

These abusers and killers are as damaged as it gets. There is rarely any changing them, just as there is rarely any true healing for their victims. The damage they cause is usually so deep, it causes permanent changes in brain chemistry and function.

This family, including the poor cat, are permanently destroyed. A tragedy.
