Florida: Hoarder’s Former Cats Need New Homes (please spread the word)

Oct 2nd 2014: Cats who survived cat hoarder need new homes

The 30+ cats seized from the home of a Lake Worth home in Palm Beach, Florida have now been cleared to be adopted out or taken in by rescues. The original story on Douglas Westcott, charged with child pornography, can be read by clicking here. Readers, be warned this is a very disturbing story, as dozens of dead cats were spread out between four freezers in the home. A total of 30 live cats, several with litters, were removed from the home and taken to Palm Beach Animal Care.

A judge is allowing those cats to be adopted out, and are now in the sole custody of Animal Care. Unfortunately, the shelter situation in Palm Beach is the same as every shelter I’ve read up on in the United States. Meaning time is running out, because space is needed for incoming animals.

These collages are small photos of the cats available. Undercats4Life is urging cat lovers to open their heart and home to one of these poor cats. A few of them have kittens, and a couple have upper respiratory infections. Those sick are being treated by the shelter and doing well. At least one cat is FeLV positive, and this is noted on the individual cat photos. The album showing all of the cats, as well as bits of information on health and temperament, can be found here.

Undercats4Life posted the seriousness of time running out on these beauties on their Facebook page.

“These are the survivors and today, the court gave custody to the shelter. It is now up to all of us to help them OUT of here asap!!! There is no time so if you see any you can help, please do!!! I do have id#s for all so please post below the photo of the cats you are interested in saving. There are 2 moms with kittens, a couple of the kittens have URI which the shelter is treating. Again, this is URGENT these precious cats find homes or rescues to take immediately or they will never make it out of the shelter alive.”

Please share this article with friends, especially those who live in the Florida area. Efforts will be made to accommodate any rescue nationwide that is willing to save these cats. More information can be found on this issue, as well as general questions answered, by contacting Mindy at mindy@undercats4life.org.

Social media has played a major role in saving cats who would otherwise die, unwanted, in our shelters. Let’s do all we can to make sure all of these sweet babies make it out alive, and find loving, forever homes.

  1. I feel so sorry for these poor souls they all have a haunted look about them. What they must have felt, sensed and seen must have been utterly traumatic..

Are there any post mortems being done on the dead ones?

  2. WHY ARE THESE CATS IN A KILL SHELTER?
Is that the best anyone could think of?

Another example that the HSUS is useless. The Humane Society never steps in to help anywhere.

Get them out and burn the place down!

    • Well said Dee! What is the point? It isn’t a shelter its a concentration camp! Definition of shelter ‘establishment that takes in and looks after lost or unwanted animals’

  3. Thank you for sharing this story. Time is of the essence. Palm Beach County is willing to work with rescues locally and out of area, but they are giving these cats very little time. Please contact Mindy at the email address above or call the shelter directly at 561-233-1200 “0” to adopt or inquire about rescue.

  4. Thank you Elisa for your follow through on this horrible story. Those cats committed no crime, but may pay with their lives if not rescued or adopted. The pound they are in, Palm Beach County, is one of the worst places for any animal to be. In just the month of September, over 400 cats were killed there.
