Forty-two cats in her car!

She had 42 cats in her car. And the car is a fairly standard sized vehicle. This must be a world record if such a record could exist.

This is the car:

The lady is 58-year-old Kathryn St. Clare. She has been convicted in the past of being a car hoarder. She was arrested in Warrenton, Oregon last Monday and has been charged with 30 counts of first-degree animal neglect.

Of the 42 cats in her car, one was dead the rest were alive. They were removed from the car and provided with food and water.

The cats have been rescued by Clatsop County Animal Control in conjunction with the Bayshore Animal Hospital and the Animal Shelter (a local animal shelter I presume).

I feel sorry for her to be honest. And I wonder if the police can assume that just because there are 42 cats in a car that they are neglected. I don’t think one necessarily follows from the other. Although I can see the argument and it is an extraordinary thing to do. How did she get them in?!

  • My hunch is that she was homeless & living in the car with her cats. Perhaps she had been evicted. Car looks like a station wagon (fairly big) but obviously the situation was impossible.
I too feel very sorry for her -- of course she didn't want things to turn out this way. Too bad our society doesn't reach out to isolated individuals & support them in their efforts to care for their animals. I doubt that there was any willful cruelty involved, though from experience I can say that it is very hard to defend these legal cases.

    • Yes, very sad. Should have reached out to help her, maybe locate resources for her to get on subsidized housing and let her keep a manageable number of her cats.
