Has Our Siamese Cat Changed Color?

by m

We lost our Siamese kitten about a month ago and we found her (at least we hope) and she’s a lighter color than we last seen her — do they change colors when kittens?

Thank you Michael! She is still here and hanging around and becoming more and more friendlier. A little better with her buddy still hisses at him and he wants to play with her so bad and goes up to her and purrs but she is not ready yet. He obviously remembers her but she acts like she does not know him. Is that normal? I wonder what the heck happened to her to throw her for such a loop????

Young kitten
by: Michael

Normally a cat will remember the house etc. even the way back. Cats have good homing devices based it is thought on the earth’s magnetic field incidentally.

However, for a young cat that might have been traumatized to a certain extent it may be normal or possible for the need for the kitten to take time to find her/his feet again.

Once again I presume this is the same cat. The markings are developing at that age so the faded markings are probably normal.

I lost my 4 month old calico/tabby kitten and found her 600 feet away from my house. I called her and she came running to me. Although bigger, one of her markings on her right foot disappeared and the one on her nose faded. Her behavior is exactly from when she left although she is very skittish and does not act like she remembers her old buddy who she curled up with all the time. Or her house. Is this normal

Siamese kitten

Yes it’s true, they do change colour and I agree with your other reply that it would be too much of a coincidence for 2 Siamese kittens to have been lost. Might I suggest you now have yours microchipped so there’s no doubt in the future. It’s a very simple procedure, just a tiny chip put in the scruff with a syringe,by a vet.

I’m glad you got your kitten back.

Yes, cats do change color as they grow from kittens to adults. Some wild cats are born with quite strong markings and they fade away, for example. Eye colour can change as well from blue to a different colour.

Siamese cats usually change from white at birth to a darker colour as they get older as the fur is heat sensitive (the warmer the lighter). However, yours (if he or she is the same cat) went lighter in colour. This may be normal but it may be the wrong cat.

That said how many Siamese kittens of your cat’s age are getting lost in your neighborhood? Not many, which means that you have probably recovered your cat.
