Milo

Hi friends... Milo is doing good but I am worried that Milo is losing too much weight. She is eating good and drinking good and is playful at times also everything seems to be normal that way but I really do think she is losing weight.

She is an older cat, she is ten years old. I was wondering if there is something wrong if she is losing too much weight?

I think anyways please if anyone knows anything about this I would love to hear from you if not I will take her to the vet asap thank you.

Darlene

Hi Darlene.. thanks for visiting and asking. Of course the vet is the best person to assess the situation but these are my thoughts for what they are worth.

If the picture heading this page is recent then I don't think she is underweight.

I also don't think ten years of age is that old although in the US some people do think a cat is old, so I respect that. For me 15 years of age is old for a cat. Changes in Older Cats gives some clues as to what to see in older cats.

If Milo is eating and drinking well and if her stools are OK and if she is urinating as usual the basic signs are that she is well.

If you are judging weight visually you might need to check by weighing yourself on scales and then weighing yourself and Milo together on the same scales. Subtract the first weight from the second to tell you how much Milo weighs and then monitor it daily to see if she really is losing weight.

Weight loss is a very general sign of illness, the causes of which are numerous so they cannot be listed here. See Cat Illness Symptoms for a list of symptoms and possible causes but please don't read into this list that Milo is ill when he might not be - it is a guide only. The best assessment is made by you with your vet and you are the boss in that relationship.

I am not sure that she is losing weight sufficiently to be of concern but you are much nearer to her and know her far better than me so I trust your assessment.

Hope this helps, Darlene, and please leave a comment telling us what you did etc. I would like a follow up to your post - thanks. I moved your post to the cat health page.

Feb 03, 2011 Update on Milo's weight loss
by: Darlene

Milo is doing good. She is losing some weight but not bad at all. She is doing everything normal on a daily basis which makes me happy and not so worried about it now.

I am so thankful God answered my prayers. He was really watching over my big baby. Lately Milo has been playing with this one laser light which she goes nuts over. I never seen her so active like this before as she runs in circles and chases after it she runs up the walls as far as she can.

Anyway she also loves to sneak up and stalk the light she crawls down on the floor and crawls the way a solider does it looks very cute other than that she is doing well and she has been snuggling up to me a lot and we are surely keeping each other warm on these Feb. snowy and very cold days.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. It is much appreciated.

Jan 10, 2011 Thyroid?
by: Gail (Boston, MA USA)

Hi Darlene, You may recall that I went thru the same with my Sadie, who was around 13-14 when she started losing weight. The vet said she had hyperthyroidism so I knonw where you're coming from.

In my case, rather than the white pills that stressed her out, I got medicated soft chewy treats that came in kitty flavors like tuna, beef, chicken, salmon, etc. Only your vet can determine the cause, so if Milo really looks like he's losing considerable weight, go to the vet. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Jan 09, 2011 Thyroid problem
by: Deanna

I had a cat, his name was Max, he started losing weight, like Milo did, had to take him to the Vet, they said he had hyper-thyroid. He had to take a little white pill everyday. Getting it from the Vet was too expensive, fortunately, I was able to drive down to T.J. (I live in San Diego) I only paid 4.85 for 200 of the little pills, but the Vet has to diagnose her first with the right medicine, you can buy the meds on line for cheaper than the Vet. fortunately, I did not need a prescription to buy it in T.J. now, I won't go to T.J. because of all the drug problem, Max lived an extra 8 years with those little pills. At first they wanted to do surgery, then, radiation, the last resort was the little white pills, and even that, I got it at a cheap price. Max was eating and drinking, but his coat was drab & rough. I remembering going to the store and buying a pound of bacon for him, he would eat it, but it was the thyroid that was causing him to lose the weight. Check her out at the Vet, and then ask about the options, sometimes we get so desperate, and it is hard to make the smart & final decision as far as treatment goes. Good Luck, I've been there:))

Jan 09, 2011 I worry too
by: Ruth

You can't help worrying I know, I'm the same with our cats over the slightest little thing but going to the vets is so traumatic for them you don't like to put them through it for no real reason do you.

Maybe you could borrow some scales and weigh Milo and then again in a week ?

If she's eating and drinking and acting normally it can't be too serious but if she really is losing weight the sooner you get her seen the better.

for ruth

by: darlene burrow

HI RUTH NO I REALLY DON'T WEIGH MILO BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE NOTHING TO WEIGH HER WITH I THINK SHE IS LOSING WEIGHT BY SEEING HER WHEN SHE WALKS AROUND AND SOMETIMES HOW SHE LAYS DOWN ALSO I DON'T KNOW IF ITS JUST ME OR SHE REALLY IS LOSING THE WEIGHT

Jan 09, 2011 My thoughts
by: Ruth

Darlene is Milo actually losing weight for sure ?

As cats age they lose some of their muscle tone and places like their shoulders tend to look a bit more bony.

Do you weigh her ?

Any doubts pop her to the vet for a check up.

Good luck.
