I Saw a Dead Cat Today

by Michael

I saw a dead cat today on the way to buying a newspaper nearby. Nothing special really. Just sad. A women was checking if the cat was dead. It was obvious to me that she was.

She was a tabby and white. Grey spotted tabby section and clean and clear white. I think she was a female judging by her size.

I am guessing she was hit by a car. She probably raced across the road from the flats on one side and ended up on the other side to die on the grass.

She was in the cat sleep position with her head turned up so the chin pointed upward.

As I walked past I said, Oh Jesus! and walked on. I can’t bear the sight. But on the way back I looked and for the remaining 400 yards of my walk home I composed this crude poem in her memory.

Just another day
I’ve got to go and buy the paper
Curled up on the grass she lay
Tabby and white, spotted
What did you say?
Yes, she was a tabby cat, I said
Another day, just another cat
No more need to fight
for territory, for space
of your own. As if sleeping
You’ve gone to a better place
Goodbye tabby girl
You’re over the rainbow bridge
And I’ll see you again one day

God speed my little girl cat…16th December 2009

No More Dead Cats
by: Joyce Sammons

Furby and Lola are my first cats kept strictly indoors. My ‘innies.’ My past experiences have changed my mind. I couldn’t stand the thought of taking the shovel down the road and bringing home and burying what’s left of my pet. The one’s the road didn’t kill the stray dogs or poison did. At least Furby and Lola are safe and I don’t spend time worrying where they are.

This will never be a trivial thing
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

I like your poem, which takes off from what to many may seem like a trivial everyday situation – roadkill. But to the cat it’s death, to the human caring for her it’s a tragic loss – and it will never be a trivial thing to those, who feel empathy with other living creatures. Thank you, Michael – and my sympathies to those, who cared for and loved this unknown tabby.

17th December 2009: The cat’s human companion has taken the cat. I don’t know what happened after that. RIP.

title
by: Ruth

I agree with Edward, the title does ‘grab you’ and is appropriate for the topic.

That life was precious and I am sad about every animal’s death, whether I knew the animal or not.

Every animal killed by abuse, every lab animal tortured then killed, every animal slaughtered for food, every animal hunted to death,I could go on and on and on ….

To some people their lives mean nothing, they are used without a thought.

Yes I too think they have souls and we were all meant to share this world, not to use or abuse the other living creatures in it, because when it all boils down to it, we are made of flesh and blood just the same as they are.

There but for the Grace of God go I …….

Hi Edward
by: Michael

I wanted the title to reflect the fact that many thousands of cats are killed on the roads every year. It is a way of life and a very sad one. The title is meant to reflect the ordinariness of this but also the sadness.

Dead Cat
by: Edward

I think the title grabs you man. You saw a dead cat and you composed a tribute to that cat. Its very sad but in a way it makes you appreciate your own cats even more. I’m surrounded by mine right now and thanking my lucky stars they are safe and well.
Yes animals do have souls, I believe that too.

sad
by: kathy

Im glad you wrote that. I feel very sad every time I see a dead animal. I get agitated every year during hunting season. No one seems to understand this. Animals have souls. No one seems to understand this either except for my animal loving friends on this web site.

Dead cat
by: Ruth aka Kattaddorra

That’s very sad Michael, someone may be looking for her later but she will never go home.I hope someone notified local vets, animal sanctuaries and Cats Protection branch because that’s where people who care about their lost pets usually ask. From doing lost and found for CP, I found that people would rather know bad news than not know if their cat was alive or dead and go on wondering.

That’s a good little poem, says it all really.

When a person dies there is great sadness and a funeral and memorials etc, but thousands of animals die or are killed for various reasons every day and are forgotten, except the much loved ones by those who loved them.

At least that cat has a memorial from you.
