Impact on cat fancy of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Conclusion: One cat association made a stand on this. Otherwise there has been no change to the international cat fancy because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is quite useful to check out what has happened in the cat fancy after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a little more than a year ago. My research indicates that the impact is minimal. The premier European cat association Fédération Internationale Féline (FiFe) banned Russian bred cats from international competition. Good for them. They have a voice. They’ve shown their attitude. A moral attitude.

The association has even donated some of their money to Ukraine. Their temporary policy is that, “No cat bred in Russia may be imported and registered in any FIFe pedigree book outside Russia, regardless of, which organization issued its pedigree [and] no cat belonging to exhibitors living in Russia may be entered at any FIFe show outside Russia, regardless of, which organization these exhibitors hold their membership in.”

But that is about it. To the best of my knowledge after some research, it appears that there are no restrictions on Russian breeders of pedigree cats by The International Cat Association (TICA). And there are no restrictions on the export of pedigree cats bred in Russia and shipped abroad to America for example. TICA apparently has no opinion on the war. Perhaps it is beyond them and their small cat fancy world.

These days, cat breeders often ship their cats internationally as people purchase them online. There’s been no attempt to restrict this business because a Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It might have happened. There might have been an attempt to follow the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) in placing restrictions on Russian breeders. The cat fancy is quite big in Russia. They are very much into their pedigree cats.

Some sort of restriction by The International Cat Association would have sent a message to Russia that the cat fancy also has a voice in this illegal, unjustified war.

I cannot find anything on the American cat associations’ attitude towards the Russian invasion. I think that it would do them some good to have a voice on the matter. It would tell the world that they are serious about these moral issues. These are big issues and they affect the rest of the world.

Do Russian breeders exhibit their cats at American cat shows? I can’t find anything on that but I would expect that sometimes some of them do. If that was the case, it would provide the organisers a chance to make a stand and have their say and ban them for as long as the Russians continue to prosecute their illegal war against Ukraine.

The attitude of the American cat associations on moral issues needs to be heard. They have a problem with this as they allow breeders to create unhealthy cats. This sends a message that they don’t have a spine. That they are mired in moral turpitude.

Domestic cats have featured quite a lot in the war with the Defense of Ukraine often tweeting pictures of cats keeping their soldiers company in the trenches. There is a connection between cats and the war. Why can’t the cat associations join in a let the world see their moral backbone? Perhaps the organisers think the war is too far away. Not in their backyard. But it affects the world including Americans. It is war between the East and West played out in Ukraine.
