Here is an attempt (!) at an infographic about cats on laps. Cats on laps are very important for both human and cat (obviously). There is a lot going on with cats on laps. There is direct, physical contact which is what cats like and humans for that matter. It is comforting. Warmth is a big deal for cats (and humans). The lap is warm. You please your cat when you allow him or her onto your lap. It is the caregiver’s solemn duty to do all they can to please their cat! When cats are on laps they often purr. The purr is therapeutic for humans and cats. It has healing properties. If you don’t believe the resonance from a purr heals physically, it certainly heals emotionally and mentally 😉👍💓.
When cats are on laps, they sometimes wash themselves. Turn the television sound off and close your eyes. Feel your cat gently moving against your legs. It is comforting. It is like gentle massage.
The lap is a great bonding tool for both human and cat. It is like glue to the relationship. It reinforces it. It is a little pleasure for both parties. My cat is a great lap cat because he likes the warmth, and he loves me and vice versa.
Not all domestic cats are born equal in their desire to be on their caregiver’s lap. It is an individual cat thing. You can only hope that your falls in the category who love it. One popular breed, the Maine Coon are said to be people-orientated but not overdependent and they don’t constantly demand attention ‘preferring to hang out with their owners’. Perhaps they are not predisposed to be lap cats. Tell me in a comment, please.
In the infographic the second bullet is novel. You can read my thoughts on gently asking a cat to get off your lap by clicking on this link.
