Is our adopted cat Turbo a Maine Coon?

I adopted Turbo (above) from a colleague who immigrated to the UK. He is just such a joy (it’s 2 months now). He is the biggest cat that I have ever seen and he is so dog-like as well. We actual call him a “cog” as he’s a mixture between a cat and a dog. My colleague said that he was very independent and not really an affectionate cat, but we experience differently. He follows me from room to room and loves to cuddle with us.

He sleeps on our bed most nights and is always rubbing up against our legs and purring. He also loves his scratching post and likes jumping for rope or a feather duster. He also loves talking to us, even if he has eaten and has enough food and water in his bowls.

We are so happy that we have him in our lives…

Your husband had his priorites right then ! lol
Looking forward to seeing another photo of Turbo,I just want to tickle his gorgeous fur like I do Mr T’s !
There’s not a lot you can do about ‘lickers’ but the fur does grow back eventually.Jozef only has a couple of thin patches now.
He may always do it if he gets stressed.
I can’t fathom out how to post photos on here, I’m a techno dinosaur lol

Thanks Ruth for the explanation of Turbo’s thinning fur and Yes he is definitely a “licker”. I have the most gorgeous photograph of him showing off his beautiful eyes, so I need to figure out how to post it. I made contact just now with my colleague’s boyfriend (who is still in SA)he is so pleased that Turbo is happy. He was nearly in tears though when they dropped Turbo at our home on 11 May. It was also my husband’s birthday and he still says that Turbo was his best gift although I gave him a 100% wool coat and Hugo Boss aftershave as a gift. Turbo is really great, you have to see the other pic of him though and see if that one also looks like Mr. Tinkles…

by: Ruth

Turbo could possibly just be a ‘licker’ as our Jozef is if he gets stressed,he licked the insides of his legs almost bald when 2 of our cats died within 9 months of each other. He grieved with us for both of them, Ebony was very old but Popsy was only 5,we lost her to a chest complaint the vets couldn’t cure.
So it may be that even though Turbo is happily settled with you, he’s been a bit stressed with coming to a new home,it’s a huge event in a cat’s life.Or it could be he has full anal glands, cats tend to lick above their tails with that.
If he keeps losing more fur it might be a good idea to have a vet look at him to put your mind at rest,as you say, it might just be the weather.
He really is a beautiful boy ! We’ll try to help Fran post a photo of his ‘twin’ Mr T.

Jul 23, 2009 Thank you

Thank you so much everyone for the comments, it feels good to know that there are so many people that feel as excited about their pets as we do. I couldn’t wait to tell my husband about all the other Turbo look-a-likes. I’m a bit concerned though as he is moulting a bit on his back legs and just above his tail on his back. He’s not bald, but definitely a thinning of hair. He has his usual Royal Cannin dry food and sachets of Whiskas (a brand here in SA)wet food in gravy or jelly. He is still very healthy and playful. It could be our winter, but maybe I should be on the safe side and take him to the vet?
Please advise me what you would do.

Turbo is a very handsome boy and he could be the identical twin of my “nephew” Mr Tinkles! He is obviously very happy with you and must feel as though he’s come home.

Jul 23, 2009 I think I have his brother!
by: Fran

Hello, I have a cat called Mr.Tinkles who is indeed the exact double of your Turbo. Tinkles is very definitely a Maine Coon, and does show all the traits of being one as well! He is a very vocal boy, and loves to break dance for visitors, he also behaves very dog like at times, but after a accident with my (ex)husband Tinkles had to have the end of his very wonderful tail amputated. He is very selective with his love but does sometimes do me the honour of sitting with me, but it is usually when he has been terrorising the rest of his family! I am sure that like one of Ruth and Barbara’s cats Tinkles is also affected by the full moon, ashis behaviour is absolutely barking then! If I was able to and not so stupid I would post a pic of him but knowing me it will get lost in the ether!I am so glad that you have Turbo and from what you say he is very very happy with you.

Jul 23, 2009 He just likes you better
by: Finn Frode

From what you tell us, Turbo seems to have bonded very well with you and he is indeed a very affectionate cat, no matter what your colleague said. Cat’s respond to the way we treat them and maybe you have just hit the right note that your colleage never found…
The completely white coat is beautiful, but as you may have heard, it is sometimes associated with deafness. There’s a fine article at the blog titled ‘Cat Coats White‘ about the genetics.
At any rate – congrats to you on a very beautiful and affectionate companion. 🙂

Turbo is gorgeous.I’m sending this link to our friend/neighbour Fran who has 14 rescue cats. One of them, Mr Tinkles, is the spitting image of your Turbo, I’m sure she’ll love to see him and comment.

Hi, thanks for showing us Turbo and talking about him. He looks fantastic (and very at home). It is nearly always the case that purebred cats (and a Maine Coon is a purebred cat) have a pedigree, which is documentation that proves that he is purebred. If you don’t have some sort of evidence he won’t strictly speaking be purebred but who really cares?

Also Maine Coons usually have long bodies, are quite slender really and they have long legs and a certain Maine Coon expression. Often they have tabby coats and they always have medium long shaggy hair plus ear furnishings (cat fancy talk for ear hair including tufts growing from the tips of their ears).

I don’t think Turbo is a Maine Coon cat but he may be a Maine Coon mix (some Maine Coon in him).

Thanks very much for sharing and I am particularly pleased to hear from South Africa.

  1. He looks like it,one way you can tell if he is, looking at his forehead right above his nose, and if you can see an ‘M’pattern in his color markings, then chances are he’s a mainecoon, but in an all white cat, I’m not sure if that’s possible.

  3. I’m Sorry To Say This But I Do Not Think He Is A Maine Coon Beacause He Looks Like An American Or British Shorthair. If He Was A maine Coon He Would Have Very Long Hair.
