Note: If I was an American, I’d vote Democrat. So, I do have a vested interest in this story but it goes further as democrats in general are more sensitive towards animal welfare which deeply interests me.
Sarcasm refers to the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say, especially in order to insult someone, or to show irritation, or just to be funny. For example, saying “they’re really on top of things” to describe a group of people who are very disorganized is using sarcasm. – Merriam-Webster dictionary
“Obviously, it was a sarcastic comment. I’ve got nothing against cats. I’ve got nothing against dogs, and I’ve got one dog at home, and I love him,” Vance said.
Is it obvious? I don’t see his remarks as being obvious. Far from it.
Personally, I don’t see any element of sarcasm in what he said. The context does not indicate sarcasm. The context indicates sexism, criticism and insult. And as I stated before, the context indicates misogyny.
He thinks that the Democrats are anti-child and he obviously thinks that American citizens should be pro-child. It seems that he is focusing on the concept of family and the need for American citizens to be pro-family and procreate. This probably comes from his Christian beliefs which I have criticised as well. His actions do not follow his beliefs.
He’s not anti-cat or anti-dog and he has a dog, he said. He is the sort of person who certainly would not have a cat. And I would suspect that he doesn’t actually like cats. I would say the same about Trump. He seems to be that typical macho man type who tends to believe that women should stay in the kitchen and be in the shadow of men.
There is an argument which goes that strict Christians don’t like cats. But they like dogs. There is a very long history of Christians disliking cats and I’m referring to the mediaeval notion that cats were the embodiment of the devil judged by the way they groom their private parts. This form of feline behavior opened up the cat to criticism from strict, right-wing Christians.

Medieval butt licking – devil connotations
It would seem that JD Vance is in a difficult position. A bad start. He is in a pickle judging by the headlines on the Internet. It is all over the internet. There is even talk of him being replaced and all because he made these arguably misogynistic, careless and insulting remarks about Kamala Harris.
JD Vance also claims that Kamala Harris and childless Democrats want to make the rest of the country ‘miserable’ in his words. It’s complete nonsense. His remarks shine a light into the deep recesses of his mind and it ain’t pretty. 😎😉
As mentioned before, Kamala Harris is not childless with two stepchildren and she’s not miserable. And she has no intention of making the country miserable. He objectives are the exct opposite. JD Vance was being mean and insulting and certainly misogynistic. There’s no way around it.
I don’t know why Harris didn’t have children of her own in an earlier relationship or even in this current relationship. She is an ambitious person who has achieved a lot. Ambitious women sometimes delay having children. Fair enough. Not something to be criticised.
That doesn’t seem to have been asked because I can’t find anything on that on the Internet at the moment. And perhaps is irrelevant anyway. We shouldn’t be prying into Kamala Harris’s private life in that way.
She is perfectly able to be a good mother and knows how to be a caregiver to offspring as she is the stepmother of her husband’s children by a former relationship. We should leave it at that.
It has to be added that not only are the remarks misogynistic, the remarks are certainly anti-cat despite what JD Vance says in his defence. He’s linking childlessness with having cats and he’s painting this classic, picture of an old woman with several cats surrounding her, sitting on the porch watching the sun set. It’s a stereotypical image and one which is sometimes used to insult decent, independent-minded, often intelligent, single women who tend to vote Democrat. because they are sensitive to the wellbeing of others including animals. These are good people undeserving of insults.
It’s completely unacceptable and I don’t see how JD Vance can get out of it.
Vance has also accused democrats of not caring about children. But republicans have blocked expanding medicaid for millions of children in red states and blocked investments in education like free community college a pre-kindergarten. My state has kicked 200,000 children off medicaid.
They’ve blocked medicare from getting lower drug costs. And when you read their Project 2025 and Agenda 47 it gets down right fascist scary. But the worse thing they’ve done is refuse funds to give children free breakfast and lunch during the summer months and think they should be janitor’s to pay for that food! While democrats aren’t perfect we invest more in the people while republicans only care about giving tax cuts to the rich and corporations while making the working people pay for them by raising their taxes. Trump just said why spend so much money of disabled humans when we could just let them die…
