Kitten rescue. Why was the person videoing and not helping?

This TikTok kitten rescue comes from the account of ‘whitesnow83’. And, you know, with the greatest of respect for the real person behind this username, I don’t think that her intentions are not as pure as the driven snow. How do I know? Well, it isn’t just me. Here are some of the first comments about the video:

Why wasn’t the person helping instead of filming

I wouldn’t have been filming. I would have been helping my dog rescue the poor kitty!

At this point i wouldn’t be surprised if the person threw the kitten in the water and let the dog rescue it for views

u know what I’m sick of humans, bring on the new earth 5d. There’s sick people out there, and the person filming is one of them

The comments are typical and this video is typical I would suggest of exploitative people desparately using set up and/or abusive kitten and puppy rescues that are difficult to watch and in which the kitten or puppy is threatened with injury or even death just for the sake of getting views for the video. Note: I am alleging that the video maker has set this up.

These people know that kitten and puppy rescue is a commercial sucess. But they also know that the chances of bumping into a genuine kitten rescue where they live is remote. They have to set up the video. This I would argue is one such example.

Is this a set up and abusive kitten rescue on TikTok?

Until September 7th I will give 10 cents to an animal charity for every comment. It is a way to help animal welfare without much effort at no cost. Comments help this website too, which is about animal welfare.

The video maker could have intervened and helped the dog recover the kitten or rescued the kitten themselves if they were genuinely committed to animal rescue and not making a successful video.

The dog rescues the kitten but in a very rough and dangerous way. On the dog’s first attempt to exit the water with the kitten the video maker could have intervened but no. The kitten slides back into the water instead.

On the second attempt I thought the dog had killed the kitten by biting them in the head in an effort to grab the kitten. It is all very disturbing because the video maker did not intervene.

Above is the video from which I tooks screenshots. Personally, I find it hard to watch and I lean on the side of the view that this is a set up video and the victim is the kitten. He is not the beneficiary of a super-dog rescue. Note: this video may stop working in due course as I don’t control its existence on my website.

The kitten is lifeless when taken from the carrier to what appears to be a vet or medical worker. That’s the good bit. Well done for that but it is the early bit – the actual rescue – which calls into question the motivations and morals of the video maker.

I am not saying for sure that they are immoral. It is not completely clear or obvious but it is not only me who thinks that this rescue looks dubious.

I was one of the first to spot set up animal rescue videos on YouTube. I reported them and it took ages for YouTube admin to respond. Fixed animal rescue videos remain on YouTube today and they have spread to all socia media platforms.

    • Thank you, Staff Sgt Gibson, for your sensible comment. Agreed. I think that there are a lot of people filming cat and dog rescue who need an ass beating because rather than rescue the animal they’s rather film it and upload the video to social media. Times have changed a lot. Back in day people rescued cats and dogs anonymously. No video. No smartphone. Just the rescue. Too many people chasing social media fame at the expense of animal welfare.
