Maine Coon Cats (comprehensive page)

The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA) have slightly different ideas as to what is the ideal Maine Coon. Click here to see a CFA Maine Coon Winner and make a comparison with a TICA Maine Coon Winner.  You will notice that TICA prefer a slightly more natural look, whereas the CFA’s preference is for a look that is a little more groomed. These links discuss in some detail the appearance of this cat. His/her appearance has remained virtually unchanged since being discovered.

Maine Coon cats are good hunters and they were originally the American wild cat, living mainly on farms where they were appreciated by farmers for their ability to catch vermin. I discuss the character of this cat breed in some more detail on this page. Update: Since building this page I have carried out further research on Maine Coon cats and their personality (this is ongoing) and you can read more and see 2 fine pictures on MC cat personality (new window). The Largest Domestic cat breed page of this website analysis all the breeds to find the largest. The conclusions are made for each major association. No surprises where this great cat comes in the rankings. Some stats on the Maine Coon:

  1. Another cute picture of him. The rescue group I got him from thought he was part Maine Coon, but weren’t sure of the other part. I know there’s no real way to tell what he is since he came from a cat hoarding household.

  2. Well I think my cat Dino (Parker’s buddy who I got at the same time as Parker) is part Maine Coon. He chirps like my friend’s Maine Coon, and he’s large and poofy. He also has a fascination with my fish tank full of convicts, as proven by the submitted photo.

  3. Susan, he is such a beautiful looking cat. He does look very contented and he has a little bit of Maine Coon in his appearance (the ruff, for example). Thank you for showing us your cat. I see that he is an orange tabby and white. Orange cats, I always think, have good characters but that is entirely anecdotal but I have gleaned that from reading lots about cats while managing this website.
