The Maine Coon is the most popular cat breed on the basis of almost 1,500 votes from a poll conducted on this website (at 16-3-09 - things will or might change, I reckon). The Maine Coon cat has just gone into the lead over the Siamese which has been leading the popularity polls for a long time.
I have always thought that the Maine Coon is a better looking cat. More than that I think the Maine Coon has a more attractive personality. It is a very particular character and they are relatively quiet compared to the Siamese. It is probably worth noting, though, that a lot of the visitors to this website are from the USA and as we know the Maine Coon is America's cat (with the American Shorthair, I guess). I feel the Maine Coon is the quintessential American cat companion though. They have grown up with America and the American people from being a mouser in barns after the settlers founded the United States to a glamorous and much loved companion cat, in the 21st century.
Here is a chart showing the top 10 most popular cat breeds by vote.
Of course the Siamese has a very long history too. Perhaps the biggest difference after appearance is the voice. MCs are relatively quiet and have a charming trill sound and Siamese are known to be vocal with a more demanding voice. You make your choice.
