In 2016 and 2017, the Mars Petcare production lines for Pedigree, Cesar, Whiskas, Nutro and Iams had a ‘significant German cockroach infestation…’. The FDA inspection said that Mars Petcare failed to prevent their pet foods from being contaminated by pests. The FDA said it was a regulatory violation.
Both the FDA and Mars Petcare ignored the violation and warnings. In breach of their duty – ‘protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products…’ – the FDA allowed cockroach ‘adulterated pet products to be sold to unknowing customers’ (Susan Thixton – Truth About Pet Food).
Susan asks ‘Who’s in charge? Mars Petcare or FDA? It seems that the answer is neither. Mars don’t care and the FDA do inspections but don’t enforce rectification measures.
