Mississippi man has saved nearly 100 cats after starting free “cat stuck in a tree” rescue

Cat Stuck in Tree Rescue Mississippi, based in Starkville is exactly what it sounds like. A cat hero named Bob Reese offers his time and service free of charge to anyone within a three-hour radius. Since May 2013 Bob has rescued 98 cats, one coon dog, and one drone in his spare time.

Some of the cats have reportedly been stuck in a tree for seven to ten days. Bob says that once a cat has been in a tree for that long, it will most definitely need rescue in getting down. If your cat has been up a tree for longer than 24 hours it’s time to call for help.

A recent rescue Bob went on was earlier this month when a call came in from a lady named Danielle from Raymond, Mississippi after Pearl Animal Control had referred Danielle to his service. Her cat Richard was in dire need of assistance, and he needed it ASAP, as the weather was about to turn ugly and Richard had been up in the tree for three days. Bob headed out the door toward another in his long line of kitty rescues. On his website, Bob posted

“Richard was about 20 feet up in a sturdy union, and his back legs were hanging down. He had been chased up the tree by a dog, and he looked tired. As I started setting up, he watched with interest and meowed a bit, clearly wanting somebody to help him. I set a rope at about 40 feet and started up. When I reached him, I broke the ice by offering Richard kitty treats even though I do not think it was necessary, he was friendly and wanted down. I put a lanyard around his limb to draw myself closer, and then easily scruffed and bagged him. Richard complained about being in the Kat bag, but quieted when I handed him off to Sierra (Danielle’s daughter).”

Bob explains on his Facebook: Cat Stuck Tree Rescue Mississippi community page as to why he decided to devote his time to climbing trees

“I try hard to spread the word. It is frustrating to me when I get a call after a kitty has been needlessly stuck for many days because they did not know about this service. About four years ago, one of our cats got stuck and I could not locate any help (she came down that same night). But, I had already done some web searches and discovered that there were people who did this, so I decided that I could do it also. So I bought some gear, watched youtube videos, practiced, and then started. I am friends with several other climbers, and we give each other tips and support, it is a fun community.”

You’re a hero to cats, Bob. Even though you don’t charge for your service, I do hope people reward you monetarily for your wonderful volunteer work. For those of you who wonder what Bob does for his day job,  he’s taught as a professor at Mississippi State University since 1988!

There are cats who become stuck in a tree somewhere on a daily basis, with cat advocates going crazy trying to find someone to help bring them down once the situation is posted on social media. It’s nice to know there are people out there willing to help. This world needs more “Bob’s.”

    • I knew everyone would love this story. There’s just something about a man climbing a tree to save a cat 🙂 I hope I can find more like this to do for the PoC readers.
