Mistaken Identity – Tales Of Male Cats With Nipples — 12 Comments

  1. Well of course male cats have nipples, just like male humans do.

Here’s a tale. My best friend from college and now related this to me, so I know the details.

She and family wanted to adopt a cat. So, they checked out (via local ads or such) available kittens. They really wanted a female cat, but adopted from the litter they saw one particular cat. Just because it seemed like the right cat. Kitten was taken to the vet. Vet said “male cat”. Okay. So Cougar was a male. Sigh. Next visit to the vet, some time later… vet said, er, actually, I made a mistake. Cougar is a female.

Fast forward. They weren’t planning for Cougar to become pregnant, but somehow she in her wily ways escaped to the big outdoors. She was at that age where the next step (and their plan) was to have her spayed, but timing was a week or so off. So, Cougar had a litter of kittens. My point here is that she was a fully capable female cat. And, at first look, the vet got it wrong. So, even experts can make a mistake as to cat gender.

  2. I’d never heard of a cat having 10 but several writing in to different forums said their cats did. I wonder whether 10 is a birth defect? I’ve had cats with 8 and my dog Dreyfuss had 8.

  3. Me and the lad next door thought my big orange cat was agirl couldn’t see his bits because of his long fur lol but the vet put me right and neutered him I haven’t thought to look for his nipples but I dare say they are there !!

  4. I knew boy cats have nipples. I have always thought that all cats have 6 nipples. Thats why having 7 or more kittens makes them tough because they must fight for a nipple. Excuse me for stating the obvious, but male humans happen to have nipples too. Although they do seem to be almost completely useless thus far they are there and I would imagine that all male mammals have nipples in the same quantities as females of their species. Male dogs have very clear and obvious nipples sometimes. Nonetheless I am sad that the hoarder lady in the story was throwing them out. I suppose if you don’t want kittens and a cat with no balls turns up on your doorstep you are led to believe it may well be female and if you aren’t sure about nipples then you may well reject the cat not knowing it has been neutered. I can see it might not be obvious at first that males also have nipples 🙂 – by the way Spot looks like a very beautiful cat. I like cats with special and unusual markings like that – they are very striking.
