Kilo Chillin

This is my albino cat (vet confirmed) Kilo (KiKi for short). He is half Siamese. His eyes are translucent. That is the only way I know how to describe them. Very pale blue would be closest, but there is some pink and white too.

He is very light-sensitive and is not allowed outdoors. The one time I tried to take him outside with me holding him he became terrified.

I adopted him through a pet rescue program. He is affectionate, beautiful, and spoiled and I love him very much.

Carrie

Hi Carrie.. thanks so much for showing us Kilo.

I think true albino cats are quite rare. I have not seen many in my travels through the internet over the past three years. Maybe someone will correct me.

Kilo looks great and it is interesting to hear from you regarding keeping him in. This is because he would get bad sunburn on his ears and around his ears I guess as he has no pigmentation to protect them.

I would also think that as he has no or very little pigmentation in the iris of his eyes that the sunlight would hurt him or it would be uncomfortable - just thinking aloud on that.

For your comment but you are misinformed. While all white cats, and certainly white cats with blue eyes are not albino, Kilo has been confirmed. His eyes have no color, they are not light blue. If you research you will find that cats with the ca2 allele are albino.

Dec 18, 2011 NOT an albino
by: Common Sense

Pretty cat but why are you calling it an "albino" when it has pale BLUE eyes? It's a blue eyed white domestic - NOT an albino. If it was albino the eyes would be pink/red!

i have an albino traditional-faced persian who has red eyes. this is the eye color of an albino, any other color is a white-dominant color cat.

Jun 19, 2010 Alu-ball
by: Carrie

What a nail-biter for us! Kilo has been practicing the long ball...he's ready to play. Now, only to convince the US to put him in. He's pretty good at keeper too, haha!

Hi Carrie. Glad to hear the alu-ball worked. Your team could have used it in the first half today... 😉

Hi Finn,

Kilo loves the alu-ball. Great idea!

I'm sorry about the Netherlands game. That OG was so unfortunate. I hope I ddn't jinx you!

by: Finn Frode, Denmark

Hi Carrie. Thank you, our team will need all the luck they can get. It's nice hearing from another soccer fan here on PoC - I don't think we are that many.
If you want a fast ball for your cat, you can make one from standard household aluminum foil. Squeeze it well and it will roll real fast while making a rattling noise that most cats can't resist. Just an idea so that Kilo will be ready for Friday's game. Good luck to you too... 😉

Jun 13, 2010 Our Furry Family Member
by: Carrie

Hi Finn,

He is a member of our family. He has a bed that he lays on that sits between my boyfriend and me. He's been watching the World Cup games with us this weekend. He also enyoys playing a little soccer with my boyfriend. He is quite good. Perhaps he should play on Team USA, haha!

Oh, good luck against The Netherlands!

Jun 13, 2010 Little things that makes great cats
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

Hi Carrie. I like your attitude. No matter how beautiful or special looking a cat may be, at the end of the day it all comes down to how well it bonds and interacts with it's humans.
We always comment on looks, but it's all the funny little things like Kilo stealing your boyfriend's seat that makes him a special cat to your family. That's what makes truly great cats that are remembered long after they're gone.
I wish you many happy years with him. 🙂

Jun 12, 2010 Hi Alicia!
by: Carrie

Thank you for posting and your compliments. I had not seen the article you mentioned. The one I read has a photo of an Albino Siamese laying in a cat condo bed. I located Lindsey's photo and you're right--Kilo does favor the cat featured quite a bit.

I am lucky to have found him. Not because of his Albinism, but because he is a part of our family. I can't imagine our lives without him now. He is playful and loving and so funny sometimes, like when he will steal my boyfriend's seat on the couch the moment he gets up. It has become a family joke.

Jun 12, 2010 Beautiful
by: Alicia

Carrie, your Kilo is beautiful and a treasure. Lindsey submitted a picture of an Albino Siamese (not sure if this is the article you saw or not) that refers to the ca allelle. The cat in the photo looks very similar to Kilo. It looks to me, though, like Kilo's eyes really do not have a color at all!

I hope you get to enjoy each other for years to come.

Jun 11, 2010 photo tips
by: carrie

thank you for your photo tips. Of course, it would help if I used our good digital camera! I have my cell phone with me a lot so I use it much to my boyfriend's chagrin.

in the smaller photos I was attempting to capture odd light reflection and his red devil eyes.

pardon the poor typing, I am using my cell phone to post this reply, haha!

Jun 11, 2010 White cat photography
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

Hi Carrie. Photographing an all black cat is difficult because texture and shades often come out as one big, black blop. I suppose an all white cat can be just as challenging - except it's a white blop. 😉
Anyway, since you bring up the subject, the flash is just too sharp for Kilo's white fur and causes some unwanted reflections. I think you should maybe turn off the flash and photograph Kilo in daylight. Not in a bright, sunny spot, because that would also cause reflections, but just ordinary indoor daylight. Modern cameras can easily handle that without any flash. Happy shooting.

I wish you could photograph him--my skill or lack thereof doesn't do him justice! I will definitely follow your tips and thank you for your compliments!

Jun 11, 2010 What a beautiful baby.
by: Joyce Sammons

I wanted to stick my nose in the photography end. Try a brighter wattage lightbulb so you don't have to use the camera flash. I have a ceiling fan with a light that holds 4 bulbs. I use 4 of those energy swirly bulbs for photos of my cats. I unscrew 3 of them when not photographing.

I'd love to get around Kilo with my camera. You're lucky to have found each other.

Jun 11, 2010 Hi Maggie!
by: Carrie

I completely understand your skepticism. I, too, questioned this because I was under the impression that albino cats would have red eyes like a bunny rabbit. When I asked my vet, he explained that there is a type of albinism in cats identified as a blue-eyed albino (symbol ca ). Their fur is completely white. The eyes have a dull red pupil in reduced light and a pale translucent blue iris. I did some research online and soon found that a lot of people mistook their solid white cats (especially ones with blue eyes) as albino. However, I located the 1980 study that identified this and found other references. The two types of albinism are differentiated by the blue eyed white albino cat being (ca/ca) and the pink or red eyed white albino cat (c/c). I'm not sure of the rules for posting links but you can find it by Googling.

At any rate, I guess that one cannot be completely be certain without DNA testing, but Kilo exhibits all of the qualities of the ca type alibino cat. When I saw the post on this site about the Albino Siamese I was struck by the similarities between Kilo and that cat (of course, Kilo is not quite as slender and is only half Siamese) and saw the link asking those with an Albino cat to post a picture, so I did!

by: Maggie Sharp

What a handsome boy your Kilo is, he certainly looks like a happy boy too! I love his cute little pink nose! Do you leash walk him? I walk my boy who is also indoors only, he loves it!

You're definitely sure your vet is right about Kilo's albinism? Albino animals have red eyes, this is caused by the eye's lack of pigment which is needed to obscure the red blood vessels which underlie retinal blood vessels. Your Kilo looks to have a normal eye colour, which makes me think that your vet hasn't quite been thorough enough when confirming Kilo's albinism...

by: Tracey (England)

Ah what a beautiful cat! He's looks so relaxed and happy a true member of your family.

Everyones right; his eyes are awesome, I've never seen an Albino cat before, thanks for sharing him.

...
for all of your kind words about my baby! I feel very lucky to have found him. I have never thought of a leash. I will have to try that. I think he would enjoy the outdoors if I were to keep him in a shaded area or take him out on a cloudy day. He sits in the bay window and looks outside and is fascinated watching the birds and squirrels and other creatures (we live at the edge of a wooded area).

I have submitted to the site-owner some pictures of him at different angles showing his changes in eye color. In diminished light they are red, but with camera flash they are an odd color that I really can't quite identify!

Thank you again for your interest!

Carrie

Jun 09, 2010 I have to add...
by: Finn Frode, Denmark

I have to add that despite her name my Snow White is not an all white cat, let alone an albino. Her name is taken from the fairytale - "white as snow, black as ivory" etc. In fact she is a mainly black tuxedo. 😉

Hi Carrie. Your Kilo is beautiful - and one more example of what remarkable cats can be found at the shelters. Once he was probably somebody else's cat and he would have had a very hard time as a stray, so I'm glad you adoptd him.
Indoor cats are usually terrified at being out in the big wide world. It's foreign territory with far too many unknown smells and sounds and it takes some time getting used to. With a little patience Kilo could learn to walk in a leash and probably have some fun from it. I recently started walking my old indoor cat Snow White - you can read about it in https://pictures-of-cats.org/walking-an-old-cat-on-the-leash.html
With an albino like Kilo you of course have to protect him getting sunburned, but early in the evening should be OK - and maybe more quiet than during the day. You can carry him around with the leash on the first few times until he gets used to everything.

Thank you for posting Kilo's picture. I honestly had no idea when I adopted him that he was an albino. I just thought he was a pretty, friendly white cat. I noticed that he did not like the overhead light on (would squint his eyes) and his eyes would turn red in dim light (my daughter affectionately calls him "the devil cat.").

I did not have a name for him when I first adopted him. After taking him to the vet and watching an old episode of Miami Vice (talking about "pure" ki's) I thought Kilo would be an amusing name for him. I rarely call him that, though. He answers to Kiki.

I have some pictures of his glowing red eyes that I will find and perhaps post if that is ok.

Thanks again,
Carrie
