VIDEO – COMMMENT: The boy that you see sitting on the sidewalk in this video is Liam from Boise, Idaho, USA. We are told that he was feeling down after his tee ball league season had ended. His mother, Krystal Woessner, noticed him having a difficult day. Liam went to the sidewalk outside his home and sat on the curb. Krystal videoed what happened next. She saw Lily, the neighbour’s indoor/outdoor cat come up to Liam and rub her flank against his back. A friendly greeting quite clearly. I would think that they know each other either pretty well or very well.

The news media headlines say that Lily is consoling Liam. I would have a different interpretation. Lily wants to meet up with Liam because they are friends. She greets him and then rolls over on the pavement to be near him. There is space between them which is very typical of domestic cats. They often like a bit of space around them. Although they do sleep in contact with each other sometimes. The news media have assumed that Lily knows that Liam is down. But does she? It is a big call. Can cats read the emotional state of humans?

Note: This is a video from another website. Sometimes they are deleted at source which stops them working on this site. If that has happened, I apologise but I have no control over it.

I don’t think this is about a cat consoling a boy but about a cat who wants to be in the presence of their friend who happens to be a boy who also happens to be a little bit sad (but that may be a fiction to dramatize the video). Nonetheless, it is charming. I’m told that the original video on YouTube gathered 2 million views. That video appears to be no longer available. I suspect that the video has been bought up but it is not clear who has done it. This video on the Caters Channel has been seen 6,759 times at the date of this article.
