Our cat is lethargic, drools and is weak

Just a few days ago our cat started acting odd. She is normally a very vocal and energetic cat but now she has become very lethargic with an on/off fever.

When she’s laying down it looks like she’s trying to go to sleep but her eyes are half open. She is also non-responsive to food or us calling her name.

She also drools a lot now and can’t seem to move very far for long periods of time, and she moves really slowly.

She has also stopped eating to the point where we have to force feed her with a syringe.

We took her to the vet but all the blood work and x-rays showed nothing wrong with her. Her sister died about 4 years ago from either heart disease or cancer; which the vet told us, but we think it might have been FIP.

Please, if anyone has or had a cat who shared similar symptoms please send me your advice and story.

I hope it’s just a cold that she’s fighting.

I hope that you have seen another vet for a second opinion. Lethargy and drooling can be indications of renal failure among other serious issues. Did the vet bother to do an examination of your fur kids mouth? Cats are prone to oral disease and infections.

You know your cat better than anyone, do not take no for an answer.

Stephanie there is no way anyone can diagnose your cat’s illness without seeing her, you need to go to a different vet for a second opinion as it is definately more than a cold your cat is suffering from.
I can’t believe the vet you saw sent you away with no diagnosis or treatment.
Please see another vet quickly before it’s too late.

Sorry to hear about this. Definitely get to a vet, you will probably have to go to an emergency vet.

My brothers cat drooled when he ate a bunch of ribbon and was very weak and wouldnt no eat. he needed surgery, but is healthy and fine now.

Hi Stephanie…thanks for visiting. I am sorry to hear about your cat’s illness. Lethargy and loss of appetite are very general symptoms so don’t really help us other than to know that your cat is feeling pretty ill.

Drooling is more specific and on the presumption that there is nothing wrong with the mouth, drooling is linked to these serious conditions and virus:

-feline leukaemia (new window)
-Feline Calicivirus – FCV
-feline respiratory disease complex which includes FCV – are the eyes also watering?
-kidney disease – is your cat drinking more as well?
-feline immunodeficiency virus

I don’t think it is possible to provide accurate analysis. I hope a visitor has some ideas.

Certain poisons can cause drooling such as insecticides. Many things are toxic to cats.

The sudden onset might indicate this but I am simply speculating. I wish you and your cat the best of luck.
