Our Devon Rex Cats

My first amazing Devon was in 1998, she was very intelligent & quite the princess. She would play ‘fetch’ like a dog (up to 7 x in a row), ‘bark’ when someone came to the door. Once I had the flu staying in and she sat on my bed 24/7 & only left for the loo, for 2 full days until I got up.

The second Devon was a gorgeous black smoke male in 2000. Our first Devon was not impressed, I suppose it didn’t help that he was male and had a strong musky odour until we neutered him. He wasn’t as bright as her, a bit of a lovable doofus. I was always disappointed that she rejected him as he tried his best to fit in with her.

Both cats were allowed to choose when to go in and out. We moved home once in the UK. No probs. Keep them locked in for a couple of weeks. They didn’t go off killing birds but loved to leg it about 10ft up a tree.

We flew them from the UK to Singapore with no problems. Although, I was like a stressed out mother! I took them to the airport & checked them in on our flight.

They both enjoyed Singapore (plenty of geckos to chase) but unfortunately our second one, the male, went missing, presumed stolen after 2 years there. He was 5. We spent 1 month looking and advertising for him to no avail. Our first Devon, didn’t seem to miss him at all.

I became pregnant & so she got less attention, she seemed to deal with it ok. She was no prob with the baby & was kept at a distance which she understood.

We flew back to the UK to live & I used a full door to door service to transport her. She arrived in excellent condition and took to our new temporary accommodation immediately. She died of old age this year aged 14.

I hope this helps owners of Devons with 3 things: 1) they can have a wonderful life inside and out 2) they can be flown around the world and arrive in excellent condition 3)beware getting a second Devon with such a large age gap between them, it didn’t work well for us. (my cousin also had the same problem with her two)

As an aside, both of them kept very good health & I only ever had vaccination costs in order to keep them. We miss them both and hope to have two sibling Devon’s come to live with us in early 2010.

Thank you for your story. I have a 2yr old Devon girl called Meeka. We will be moving to a house for just the two of us in the new year and I have been thinking about getting her a devon-friend. She is used to having people about during the day, but in our new living situation it is likely she will be home alone during my work days. She is very much a stereotypical devon in that she is super attached to me and will wait for me like a dog and follow me about the house! Your story has given me pause for thought. She currently lives with a moggie cat called meow-meow who would much prefer to be an only cat and ignores or hisses at her when they are in the same room. When Meeka first arrived she attempted to make friends but has resorted to watching from afar or sneaking up on meow-meow and trying to ‘tap’ her with her paw- much to her annoyance!

Hi Cherie. I’ve only seen Devon Rex cats at the shows, so I didn’t know much about them – until I read your page. They seem like very playful cats that easily adapt to new circumstances and bond extremely well with their humans.

That bonding actually could have been the problem when your older cat rejected the younger. She already had very close ties to you, and so she didn’t need a new cat around. She may have thought, “A cat? What for?” 😉

This is our first Devon story and a really nice one it is. Thanks for taking the time to share. The personal stories say so much about the breeds and it is nice to see how healthy your Devons were. I changed the title so that it is better found on the internet the search engines.

  1. i HAVE A 13 YEAR OLD DEVON, CALLED NEMESIS, SHE HAS LIVED WITH ME FOR 11 YEARS SINCE THE PASSING OF HER OWNER. SHE IS THE ONLY CAT BUT RULES MY 2 POODLES WITH A ROD OF IRON, HER WORD IS THEIR COMMAND!
