An owl café coming to London is using the advertising angle of being for people who “hate cat cafés.”
Owl cafés have been quite popular in Tokyo, and in March one will be coming for a one week stint in London. Due to concerns of animal advocates who worry about the owls, the decision has been made to keep the event alcohol free. Organizers are working with the Westminster Council and the U.K. government’s Animal Health Inspector – Markets and Consumer Protection at the Animal Health and Welfare division to ensure the owls are kept safe.
Annie The Owl will host Annie Visits London for one week in March in the Soho neighborhood from the 19th to the 25th. The organizers are a group of people who run pop up events, and consider London a good market. This, in turn will help the conservation of owls in the UK. The groups Locappy (a start up group who uses an owl as a mascot) and The Barn Owl Centre are helping with the one week event.
To get a ticket, you must win an admission lottery ticket. Twenty pounds gets you into the bar for two hours. The café will only be open from 8:00 p.m. Until 2:00 a.m. The original ad said admission will include a cocktail. It’s unclear how many people will still be interested once they learn it will be an alcohol-free evening. All proceeds will go toward owl conservation charity in the UK.
Here’s a short clip describing the event (made before the decision to ban alcohol was reached).
What’s disturbing is how Annie the Owl is promoting the event as “for people who hate cat cafés.” What does an owl café have to do with hating cats? Is this just a promotional tool to promote the owls, or to draw cat haters to the various news articles touting the event. Cats should never even have been mentioned, in my opinion. Please leave your opinion of targeting cat haters to read about Annie Visits London in the comment section.
Information for the truly ineducable:
Outdoor cats destroy owls’ ONLY visible and attainable food-sources. Where there are people’s cats there are no owls. Any owls and their offspring have been starved-to-death by people’s cats.
Got it? No? Didn’t think so.
And it’s not about hating any animal. It’s about preferring native wildlife (upon which our own lives and the lives of all others depend) over that of any human-engineered cats.
It is you who does not get the fact that you are biased and nasty at the same time. Don’t tell me…you are an ornithologist and you shoot cats for fun.
Got it? No? Didn’t think so.
Jason, just stay away because your stupidity annoys me.
You have that a bit backward. My revealing to you your own phenomenal stupidity and astounding ignorance is what annoys you.
Oh, Jason, you are so sad. Really. Your bias is shockingly transparent and you’re almost certainly Woody. So…piss off.
Owl looks for small animals to eat. Oh dear, it can’t find any. Cats have destroyed all the small animals in the area. The owl and its offspring now starve to death.
I guess even this simple concept of ecology is beyond your ability to reason and think anymore. Oh well! (You do realize what a a hugely ignorant fool you are making yourself out to be, don’t you?)
You might want to get at least a grammar-school level of education in subjects about nature and the natural world before you decide to host a site that is drastically harming the well-being of nature everywhere on the planet. Don’t you think? Of course you don’t. You can’t even figure out why owls die if there are cats around. Wow. You are sadder than sad.
