Peke-face Persian’s eating and oral health problems. Infographic explains.

The infographic highlights potential eating and oral health issues faced by Peke-face Persians, caused by their shortened facial structure. This is the result of decades of extreme selective breeding that prioritizes appearance over health.

This breed suffers many other health problems for the same reason (see some links below the infographic). I have argued in a strongly worded post that the two leading cat associations in the USA are culpable for cat cruelty in insisting through breed standards that affiliated breeders create inherently unhealthy cats which would be designated ‘torture breeding‘ in a country more sensitive to animal welfare: Germany.

Peke-face Persian’s eating and oral health problems. Infographic explains by Michael Broad

I know people don’t like to read about this serious stuff. Most internet users prefer the frivilous stuff about celebrities and weird looking cats. But I have to address the tough stories because at the end of the day we are responsible for the health and welfare of these companion animals and that must be more important than appearance. It is our moral duty to face these problems and deal with them. The cat associations have abdicated their responsibilities in this regard.

Ethical breeding is vital. There is some! But not enough. The Peke-face aka flat-faced Persian is the result of a failure in ethical cat breeding. Here is a section on ethical cat breeding.

Ethical purebred cat breeding involves practices that prioritize the health, well-being, and temperament of cats over aesthetics or profit. It focuses on preserving and improving breed standards while minimizing genetic disorders. Ethical breeders carefully select mating pairs based on health screenings, genetic diversity, and sound temperaments to avoid passing on hereditary diseases. They provide proper veterinary care, socialization, and a healthy environment for kittens and breeding cats.

Such breeders are transparent, ensuring prospective owners understand the breed’s care needs, potential health risks, and responsibilities. Ethical breeding also emphasizes animal welfare over extreme physical traits that may compromise a cat’s quality of life.
